This is a friend of mine i hadn't talked to in awhile, he was telling me about swapping his hatch (B16), but can't get it to start. I ask him what it's doing, he says "Well, it's sucking in the exhaust and blowing out the intake". He said his cam timing is on, he's checked it over and over, the only thing i can think is that the starter would be spinning backwards. Anyway, if i could get some ideas for next time i see him, that'd be fantastic, i'm curious what it could be as well.

I'll check it out with him sometime, i'm stumped trying to think of obvious things it could be, like i said, he said his cam timing is dead on, he checked it multiple times. I can only guess his starter is spinning the engine backwards.

 

Word of mouth to us isnt going to help your friend.

Look at the car then if you cant figure it out come back to us and well try to figure it out.

But i would look at timing, he might think he did it right when he did it backwards

no its not the starter!, its the timing his timing is off. probably his ignition timing also.

 

theres no way that the stater is spinning it backwards check dizzy and all other ignition and both cams

 

this would be one somewhat frequent occasions that would benefit from taking almost everything apart and putting it back together correctly and double-triple checking it each time.

 

Well, it could be your valve adjustment's too tight and your valves simply aren't closing. It could be the cams. Either the CAM timing's wrong or you have the wrong cams in the wrong holes OR you've got bent valves. Dizzy will have no affect on this, even of it was possible to install it 180 out (it isn't, the cams are keyed and it'll only go one way).

I'm not sure it's possible to have the cams on wrong AND have the dizzy bolted up properly. I doubt the exhaust cam's machined to drive the dizzy.

Be damn careful, you're either on the verge of bending valves or already have. Once you bolt the head on, don't move the cams unless you KNOW the pistons are out of the way (I normally set it to #1 TDC then back the engine off TDC 20 degree's so I know the pistons are out of the way).

 

I was thinking maybe he had an aftermarket starter and since Honda engines spin backwards, the company may've assembled it to spin clockwise insted of counter. *shrug*

Just brainstorming, i'll send him this thread to read over sometime.

 

just crank it over and see if the crank pully is turning the right way, I highly dought its the starter

u sure u don't mean 180º(degrees), iono about 180%....that's too far otu of whack to run at all

It sounds like the cam is like...backwards or something, I've never seen a problem like this...well I still haven't seen it..but I haven't even heard of a problem like this, it has to be something with the cams or timing...

I got some more info, a friend of mine came down from Indy to check it out, i talked to him about it. The cam timing is 100% positive on, everything is good, i found out the cam timing when he bought it was off, we both agreed likely his valves are bent.

 

I had a buddy who was re-building a baja bug engine. He was telling me when he first went to start it, exhaust was coming out the intake and it was trying to suck in air through the exhaust, it never really started it just sputtered a bit. Turned out his cam was in backwards.

 

If its sucking in thru the exhaust and blowing out the intkae then your porblem is timing. The intake valves are opening on the exhaust stroke and the exhaust valves are opening on the intake stroke. Something is backwards.

 

wrd. i agree with Sandmaggot!
make sure the under pully is lined up right with the "marks" and make sure the first cylinder is in completey top dead center, and no the starter has nothing to do with it so get that out of yalls mind. i have had this problem before and sure enough it the timing just because your cam is lined up doesn't mean its lined up right with the under drive pully marks

 

yeah, I got that feeling too that it has something to do with the cam
