Default 4th gen tranny on 5th gen?

I'm about to swap out my auto in my 5th gen so I'm wondering would a 4th gen tranny work in my 5th gen?

The reason I ask is because there are so many 4th gens that come into the junkyard every and not so many 5th gens. TIA

Another question... Can I reuse ECU or will it cause a problem?

All I can think of is Check Engine Light, but will it be driveable?

not all 4th gen trannys will work. The earlier 90-91 trannys won't work. The 5th gen mount won't bolt up to the 90-91 transmission and the 90-91 mounts won't bolt up to the bracket. I learned this the hard way.

if you have a 94-95 ODBI you can reuse the ECU, just dump the TCU. If you have a 96-97 ODBII you will need to buy a new MT ECU.

So 92 and up manual transmissions will work? I have a 97 CL 2.2 so I guess I'll need a MT ECU then, but what will happen if I reuse the old one?

yeah you will need a MT ECU. You can use ur ECU, the car will run with no problems. You'll just get a CEL light. I ran with the auto ecu on my 96 for like a month before i was able to locate the right ecu.

Another tip on the transmission is when you go look for it, bring a 5spd mount and see if it will go on the transmission.

So did the mount bolt on to the tranny, but was not lining up with the car when you installed it or the mount just didn't even bolt up?

the 92+ lude or accord tranny will swap right in as for the ECU I hope you have the red learn key. if not your married to the auto ECU as the immobilizer will not program keys without it , good news if your auto ecu can be modded to 5sp by resoldering the jumper RP13 to RP 14 inside the ecu..just remember it's surface mount and only for people that are handy with the soldering iron.

what is the red learn key? Do you mean that my key has an immobalizer on it?? It's only a 97 CL. I hope I can resolder it for MT, do you have a any pix of the jumpers and locations on the ECU from where I need to desolder and resolder?

Anyone have info on the immobilizers and if the 97 CL 2.2 has it?

Second, I can use any manual transmission out of 92 and up accords and preludes and will the shifter bolt up without anymods? I know I will need to drill and mod for the pedals and clutch master cyl.

1. I'm not exactly sure. Does a key indicater light up when you start up or turn off the car?

2. The shifter cables will bolt up to the tranmission fine. Just make sure you get both the shifter cable and shifter assembly from the same car. I.E. a shifter cable from a 90-93 will not bolt up to a 94-97 shifter assembly.

1. No the I don't have a key indicator light.

2. So if I get the shift cables from 90-93 accord get the entire shift cables and shifter assembly and some thing with 94-97? The 90-93 will bolt up fine to my 97 CL right?

it should be the same, or you can get the 94-97 shift cables and shifter or the 92-96 prelude ones..
