I have a welding question, please awnser promptly...
Ok, the other day I went to a temp angency service to try to get a job at Toyota(manufacture forklifts) somewhere on the production line. Well, they noted that I have a couple months of welding experience on my resume(I figured it might look good)...so after filling out the application, they had me do a couple of test(one which was a welder survey) and turned them all in(Resume, application, and tests). That was Friday I do believe. So today, I have a message on my awnsering machine that Toyota got ahold of Kelly Servicies(temp agency) and wanted me to come in for a welder's test. I'm quite happy(I need a job with medical insurance as I don't have any) but quite nervious, so what should I expect? How should I prepare? I know I'm not a pro welder right now, but I like to show them I can do it. Know what I mean?
what type of welding?
make sure you bring your helmet/gloves/and leathers if you want
you cant really bs through a weld test, either you know how to do it or you dont

I have never taken a test lie this but I have been told that most part of these test is knowing how to set up the equipment.
Just make sure you prep your metal real good before you weld.

Mig welding is probbly(hopefully) is what I'll get tested on, I hope they don'y mind me not owning any leather.

...that's another thing, I'm not sure how to properly set up the nicer welder(heat, wire speed, etc.) and not entirely sure what method of cleaning the metal would be(grinding down the metal, use wire brush, wipe with acetone, etc.)....any inputs?

i've taken several of these tests (certified structural steel welder) and you really dont have to worry to much how clean it is. Just run a grinder over where ever you have to weld just to be sure. Especially if they used a burn table to cut the steel. you really need to know what type of welding you will be doing, and what thickness and what kind of wire.
alot of the set up i do is by trial and error ask them for a scrap piece of the same thickness so you can get the welder dialed in. They shouldn't have a problem with you doing this because every machine is different and its expected that you cant just go in ther and turn a few ***** and be ready to go.
if you have to do TIG cleanlyness is next to godlyness.

Thanks...would you happen to have a clue what they might have me do?

i guess plan for the worst, think of doing overhead and vertical up or downs
if its flux core depending on the type of wire and application they might have you do overhead and vertical up. (.045)
and if its 3/32 you'll only have to do flat welds
.035 hard wire and you'll have to do a vertical down and overhead.
it really depends on what they do and what they plan on having you do.

Congratulations.
Is it mostly structural/maintenance welding?
What Indiana plant did you get hired at? My friend is working at the plant out in Evansville right now.
