What is a knock sensor and what does it do?

a knock sensor is what tell ur ecu that ur car has a internal problem. it picks up any knocking noise in the engine

As far as I know, the D16Y8 is the only D-series to have a knock sensor.

you'll notice the engines that have knock sensors have higher compression ratios..obviously for the detonation/pinging that usually occurs with the higher compressions..
