Default 93 civic transmission... noises?

hey guys

today i went to check out my friends 93 civic coupe (auto)... not quite sure which trim it is, but i dont think that matters.

yesterday, he was claiming that after driving a little bit, the car would just rev, even though it was in gear. he had to push his car back home.

so after checking the car out today, i found out there was zero engine oil showing on the dip stick, and there was plenty tranny fluid left.

then he let me take it around his neighborhood, and i did notice a whirring noise... but im not sure if thats just how the car is supposed to sound. the car shifted fine, but i didnt take it above 4k.

anybody have a clue whats going on? could it just have been an engine oil issue?

thanks

yeah, low on engine oil always affects the tranny. J/K, sounds like the tranny is bad, getting hot and slipping.
