b16 head advice

Hey guys, I know there has been a million posts on this before, and frankly im afraid to ask for advice, cause I hear these boards are full of flamers.
I have a b20/b16head in my EK coupe, first off its N/A the bottom end is already built, bored, sleeved, stroker kit, now I am working on up to the head. I already have insane amount of tourqe so I wasn't thinking of building up to much, atleast stage 1 cams, maybe a pnp job.
I guess what I am asking is, what would you do if you had a blank b16 head to build.
-PnP (yes or no)
-Which valvetrain should I go with
-Cams/gears
-ect
Thanks in advance, and if we can hold the flaming to a minimum PLEASE

I'd think twice about the port n polish job, only because the b16 heads allready have great flow characteristics, if you do decide to port it out... make sure a very experienced porter is doing the work, and don't over do it... as you will loose some bottom end but get it back up top... on the flipside, you do have 2.0 litres, so it could be beneficial the whole way through the rpm range, i don't have much experience with the b20/vtec setups... as far as valvetrain, stick to the type r stuff, unless you really wanna rev it up... then go to a kit, (cams, springs, retainers, all from the same comp.) just so you know it will work together, as for cam gears, i think i read somewhere that unorthodox has more adjustability than AEM or most others...not knowing your static compression rate with the oem b16 chambers, consider milling the head a little extra to bump compression up... don't get crazy with this either tho... because you still want to be able to drive it on cold days with pump gas i'm assuming.... all aside, make sure all your parts are designed to give you power in the desired range, there's no point in getting a valvetrain designed to make power from 7.5-10k when you are running a header that won't support it...

Well, its bored .20 over with a stroker kit, it's 2.2L now haha, If I did get some pnp work it would probably be from portflow, unless someone knows other companys. When portflow does the job, it also comes with valvetrain, and all you need to do it buy cams.
Would you go with pro series cams from S2, or just regular S2S1s or 2s? I hear what you're saying about the whole kit though, smart idea. I do have TypeR valvetrain hiding around in my garage, but I wanted to do it up alittle more. The compression is insane. Broke 3 compression testers on the first 2 cylindars alone. I think they figured it out to be either 13.1 or something around that range. Thanks for the quick reply man, let me know what you think about it.

what kind of pistons are you running and what are your compression ratio? i'd say use your ITR valvesprings and put on some stage1 skunk cams... they work real well and have really good top end power and they max out around 9000k rpm i have a set for sale if you're interested.. if your compression is really high (11:5 and up) then i would get an aftermarket springs and ret and go with the stage2s..
i also am doing a b20 vtec and i have a skunk 2 valve train w/ titanium retainers, i had some custom cams made for my build and im using str cam gears
as far as the valvetrain goes - supertech is basically the same stuff as skunk 2 and is just as good in quality w/ a lower price tag...i was going to get the supertech stuff but found a real good deal on the skunk 2
cam gears - AEM will be fine and their pretty cheap
13.1 comp?? assuming this isnt ur daily driver then
i decided to go w/ 12.3 comp

I actually ran out and baught a new compression tester, and figured it out to be about 12.3. Great minds think alike eh?
You happy with those str cam gears? And what/where did you get your cams?
EDIT - Did you get a PnP job on your build? If so where did you go about getting it done?

Compression is 12.3, it has stock b16 spring/rets and some GSR cams, with the stroker kits, it revs out faster then all ****, and hits limiter at about 8.9. If I upgraded my internals on the head, could I get it to wrap out to about 9.5-10?

ya i didnt think ur compression was 13 somethin becuase ud need race gas to run that w/ out blowin her up---anything above 12.5 u need 100+ octaine
the str gears are supposed to be really good, ill be puttin my engine in this weekend......heres the link to my build to answer some of ur questions

i upgraded ALL my internals and ill be makin power till ~ 9.5k
w/ stock valvetrain i would definately not take it up that high

What I am getting from your post is this (please correct me if I'm wrong) you have an 84.5mmx95mm bottom end.. For anyone to say that good headwork wouldn't help you is rediculous. You have a head that was designed to flowenough air for a 1.6 you are now a 2.2.
My recc is this
1. Have your head ported by a company who does CNC porting(because the results come out the same on every unit)
Use a reputable valve train setup .. Such as ferrea, manley, crower ect.
3. Choose a camshaft profile that best supports what type of driving(racing) that you will be doing ex: blox2's (same as skunk2's but cheaper) , toda bs, rocket ect.
As far as cam gears go .. RAGE, skunk2, whatever.......
Shameless plug: we offer an entire top end package that includes ..CNC port, 3/5 angle v job, full valvetrain w/titanium retainers, cams w/gears, CnC ported intake manifold, t-body, injectors, and stainless tri-y header. Note package= extremely better price than purchasing piece by piece....

No thats just where the limit is, I don't go that high, rofl. Why I wanted to upgrade so I can wrap out high, while still making power.
HOOKUPS, shoot me a price on that whole package, or one that you think I would need on this head.

its not cheap-but if your really INTO this stuff and want some extra ponies then youll do it!
youll DEFINATELY want porting done, you'll pick up alot of cfm's and with an NA build thats what your shotting for
i ended up getting about 25 more cfm's w/ my 3 angle valve job and a street package port job from stewart engines, which translates into a decent gain and power
