Less than 10K mi on new suspension...and already a blown Koni!!!
So a couple months ago I put together some Ground Controls (400lbsin F, 500R), the Ground Control upper mounts, and some Koni Yellows that I purchased brand new. The car isnt even close to being slammed (at least a 2 finger gap) been tracked 3 times since then and less than 10K miles total on the whole setup. Never the less I pop the hood to see this:
Fresh oil leaking from the top adjustment **** all over the upper mount...

After doing a lot of reading and researching I thought this setup would be the way to go, didnt know I'd have the fun to tearing it all down, lose the suspension settings and have to get another alignment after 10K...

That sucks, but they should warranty that for you. PM user CRX Lee and see what he recommends you do (he works for Koni).
nice......i guess i should start on trying to get a new one, cuz my pass rear has some oil like that....but not that much.
Did you get the koni's revalved?
Im not 100% sure about this, but aren't the off the shelf Koni's only rated for 400lb spring rates. Again, im not sure, so if someone can correct me if im wrong.

******' bogus
. I wonder what could of caused it to leak. Just a fluke maybe? I'm sure it's under warranty but still, kinda of a let down. Let us know how you make out
EDIT: the KTeller8 Koni sale thread made me think of this thread. It's titled "Koni yellow blowout"

They will handle more than that, although around that is kind of a rough guideline.
My non-revalved yellows took 600lb springs and ~30 autoxes, and 2-3 track days w/o any issues.

The warranty works with a copy of the original receipt (which was back last July), and a copy of the vehicle registration...
Other than that I believe they are still covered but still the downtime sucks.

Unfortunate side effect of mass production. It happens to the best of them though.
Sucks at any rate...

While they are out, I would recommend getthing them revalved.
My revalved yellows have a couple dozen track days, and just over 40k miles. No complaints at all

I am pretty sure that those rates are at the very upper limit of the valving of the shocks, especially the 500lb/in
But I have 650lb/in on non-valved ones too and they have done many track days. But I have been told that they will eventually blow with rates that high.
Maybe we just got lucky?

ouch! I just got my self koni neuspeed yellow shocks too and this is a scary sight to see.
hope you get them replace through warranty
BTW I called koni North America before buying my Yellows and the service rep said that the off the self yellows are rated at 500-550 lb/in the front and 550-600 lb/in.

What's the latest on your blown shock & lifetime warranty?
I just ordered the same set-up.

Maybe I should clear... Reliablitly wise, I've personally never first hand seen a failure of a Koni, nor a Tein. Both are of extremely high quality.
Truth is, not everything is perfect, if everything was perfect Auto technicians would have no job, and neither would half of the rest of the world.

Sorry to hear - could've been a bad piece of metal internally or something.
In my chats with CRX LEE (great guy btw), he mentioned the failure rates on these is incredibly low. With the same setup as you, and 5 years on the clock, he wasn't worried about mine having any significant wear.
As a side note...
For those considering revalving, he also mentioned to check your ride height, as riding on the bump stops can cause bumpiness (and not a sign of a "blown" shock).

your standard koni that isnt revalved imo isnt up to spec to what a lot of the owners here with revalved konis are telling you what it can handle.... i never had first hand exp but i think out the box they arent valved for high rate springs, 400/500 being close to what i'd throw on.
for that reason i decided to go with bilsteins (plus they were much cheaper for me to get - about 50% the cost
) I also am using 400/500 GCs.
im sure my bilsteins may/may not go but i've been happy with the setup and it handles 400/500 just fine.
tein shocks, i've heard of mixed reviews, depending on the model, but for the most part alot of the cost involved with the tein shocks/setups are from the jdm blingage i reckon.
