Trans. fluid, oil, and brake fluid question for a project CRX...
Hey!
I'm going to pick up an 88 Si today for my ITA project, and I'll be stopping by a few autoparts stores to breath life back into this car. I just wanted to double check with you guys that Honda MTF, Mobile 1 Synthetic, and Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid would be fine. I'll eventually swap brake fluid to ATE for racing, but I want something in there in the meantime that I can flush often for cheap. I run Honda MTF, Mobile 1 Synth., and ATE in the ITR and I have always been happy. Is this the right direction for the CRX?
Sorry about the basic question, but I'm sure you know the Search function is hurting right now.

hmmm.... i have been under the impression that it's usually not a good idea to run synthetic oil in older engines that have never seen synthetic before. I believe the seals over time actually swell due to dino oil. when you switch over to a synthetic the seals no longer swell and form gaps leaving you with oil outside of the engine. this is just something i read about a long time ago but seemed a good enough reason for me not to use synthetic until my rebuild.
Honda MTF is very much a personal preference and/or transmission preference. Some like it, some dont.
Ford's Heavy Duty DOT 4 brake fluid works good for me.

Also fot the transmission, you can use regular motor oil if it's a manual. I learned that trick from a couple friends who are techs at one of the local Honda dealers.
1. Honda MTF is great stuff. It's known to fix tranny problems from Civics to NSX's. Sure you **can** use motor oil, but IMO this stuff is much better. It's about the same price too.
2. I think the story about older motors leaking on synthetic oils is an old wives tale. This might have happened 20 years ago but modern synths are blended with the stuff needed to keep seals fresh.
