Vtec Head on non vtec block without hooking up the vtec
I dont care about the ls/vtec or the b20/vtec.
I want to know if the vtec heads flow better than the non vtec heads (are the vavles diff, etc. ) and if anyone has mated a vtec head to a non vtec block and seen any gains without hooking up the vtec. I guess it would be the same prinicpal as the vtec just not working on a motor..

supposily, it should flow better but whats the use of going through all that trouble with hooking up the v-tec unless your going turbo....i know this guy who ran a ls-vtec setup(full race car)with turbo making 550 to the wheels with out the vtec on....so i think it depends on your set up....
dude if you put a vtec head on and dont run vtec thats kinda retarted. They flow lots better than ls heads so yeah it would woork.

Getting VTEC is not the main point when hooking up the oil lines. You need those lines to get oil into the head. No matter what, you still have to run the lines and tap the head.
If you don’t want VTEC, just don’t wire up the vtec solenoid.

um hooking up vtec dosent hurt the low end dude. if your gonna go through all that trouble run 1 damn wire and turn vtec on.

PS the answer is: Honda has tried a VTEC head on a non-VTEC block (the B18A) and decided it was better with VTEC (therefore the B18C).

Uh, I think you're missing the whole POINT of VTEC. The key point in the VTEC system is the CAMS! Sure, you can bolt on a VTEC head and not hook it up. But what point would that do?...you won't be able to take advantage of the better flowing head without the big lobes. Well, unless you're dropping in some Toda VTEC-killer cams...which eliminates the VTEC system and runs solely on a huge cam. If you don't hook up the VTEC, then you'll only run on the smaller cams. Kinda negates the purpose of a high flowing head, don't you agree?
But then again, you can port the heck out of an LS head, throw in some wild cams, with built valvetrain...and have the same, if not better performance of a regular VTEC head on an LS block.

Why would you take the torqueless wonder of the primary cam on a vtec head and run it all day ? If you are going thru the trouble of an LS/Vtec, just hook up the Vtec, otherwise... spend the money on a mild PnP job on the LS head.. it will flow better than a B16 and you will keep the stock head config.
The only downside is you will lost a bit of lowend, but the mid-top end gain will more than make up for it.
BTW, I believe the Vtec head is a little heavier than the LS head... plus PnP will lighten it ..

You must have driven a B16 powered car. B16’s have no torque at all and don’t really feel that fast.
It would be different if it was a straight GSR motor/ITR.
Ive seen dyno numbers of 135HP to the wheels with 104lbs torque on B16’s
While my SOHC is pushing 138WHP with 117lbs of torque.
either those, or the car you drove just sucked.

and another thing, if you put a vtec head on a non vtec block and just run on cams that still have the vtec lobe somthing is going to break. the nonvtec lobe on the cams arent made to go to 8000.

the engine still revs to 8000 but it is SOOOO breathless, it feels like she is choking
if you want better flow of the head, without VTEC, get hell lumpy cams, like those circut racing (non)VTECs have,
the cams are designed for over 5000rpm operation where you can take advantage of the free revability of teh engine combined with the good airflows in the head...
yeah, quite a specialised engine = race only, but it does have merits...

I think Big Bentley, with 10 posts total, doesn't even own a Honda.
But anyways, get your LS head ported if you're so "anti-VTEC". That'll solve any difference between the two heads.

I have driven 3 different b16 powered cars, crx & 2 6th gen coupes.
Your right I dont even own a honda, but I want to build a nice daily driver for my commute. I am a die hard vw guy, but I dont hate on other manufacturers. I realize there is great potential for hondas, there are just to many bad examples everywhere.
I am also not impressed with the lack luster low end of vtec cars. I want a torque monster.

That explains it. Go drive a car with an ITR or GSR motor, the feel is totally different from a B16 motor. the B16 motor is the worth DOHC VTEC in my opinion. NO torque at all. The only thing its good for is the head. Unless you go turbo on it or stroke it to a 1.8L or sumthing. That block is pretty much worthless. That is why B16 blocks go for like $50. No one wants them.
