Default What kind of welding wire/rod do you use to not splatter?

My dad has an o.k. mig welder he bought at harbor freight. It get's the job done, but sometimes can be very messy. What kind of stuff do most of you guys who mig weld use so it doesn't splatter, without using argon? Thanks.

your not mig welding if you arent using shielding gas. Are you?

you shouldent really have any spatter if you are using gas and doing it right.

keeping the contact tip as close to the work as possible makes a ton less spatter too.

the welding machine didn't come with the gas, or a way to get gas to the tip. and I'm only welding steel to steel.

Then you should be using a fluxcore mild steel wire, probably .035 is what you machine is set up for. Other than that, anti spatter spray is your friend.
