Is my engine ruined? Timing belt slipped due to manual tensioner failure. new poster
1997 accord EX, automatic tranny, 4 cyl, 147k miles, 6000 miles since new timing belt was installed by the Honda dealer.
My manual timing belt tensioner failed, resulting in my timing belt slipping several teeth.
The Honda dealer mechanics reported that some ex valves were bent. Should I consider this engine to be toast or should I agree to a repair? (~$1500 quote)
Honda dealer says he recommends to NOT repair it. He'll give me bluebook value on it since it's a warranty issue and has suggested that I trade it in for another honda.
What do you techs recommend?
Have the head reworked or consider it trashed and just get another Accord?
If I trade it off, should I focus on the gen 5 or a gen 6? V6 or 4 cyl
any help would be very much appreciated, since this is my first post.
thanks!
obtw, I searched all the old posts for hours and didnt see any direct answer to my question....

yep, there shoulda been a warranty...it's 12 months in my area...
the tensioner should have been replaced along w/ the other various parts (i'e' the water pump, balance shaft tensioner/belt, cam/crank seals, etc...). I mean the tech did inspect it???
when I had mine's replaced, the tensioner's bearings were kinda rough in comparison to the new ones i've pre-purchased (this was @ ~100K miles when it was done).
my local dealer forgot to install/replace the crank seal & cam seal retainer--- i've got until spring of next year to return it to them & they'll install these @ a later date since wifey doesn't have time off until the summer...

Yes. there is a 12 month warranty on the work.
Im just wondering if I should have them do the warranty work or just trade the car in for something else?

depends on how much you like your car. If you would want to or think its practical to keep your car then let them fix it, or if you think its time for a new one, then do that.

have them do the warranty work and show you then engine once it is torn down. They have to take the head out...

woo hold off there, dealer did a t-belt 6000 miles ago?? now the tensioner failed?? did they say how it failed?? why did they not replace it ? man i would talk to whomever is in charge there,, it is hard to swallow that they were just in that area a few months back and now tensionser failed and you got to replace the engine....\\\ I think dealer should be responsible ..
have them tell you exactly what happen to tensioner,, i have a feeling they are covering something up,,,,if tensioner fails it makes noise, I have done Hundreds of timing belt and i have never seen a tensioner come totally aprt yet ,,noisy yes
I bet something was not installed properly or left loose and it came undone ..
dealer should fix the whole thing for free
I could rub it in on my buddy YEUEMMAIMAI about how good dealer work is but i won't
ehy YEU,, just playing with you pal,,

A-P,
I only recommend the Honda dealers who are HONEST and do things right....
besides if this dealer is shady we'll find out soon enough....
There are no reptuable honda only shops in the twin cities that I would trust so I have to take my car to the dealer but those bitches are on strike
p.s. I want everyone to be honest as that is the best way to make $$... If my dealer ever cheated me, I would not sue them again for sure...
P.S.S I know you are messing with me

sue shoud be use... I am not letigation happy unless it is a last restort

Your 97 is a TANK compared to the newer cars, I'd have the valves replaced and drive it another 100k miles. I've had great sucess doing this for customers cars.
