Is it possible to overfil the manual tranny oil? I suddenly have a 5th gear grind...
About a week after flushing out my manual tranny oil and refilling w/ Redline MTL, my 5th gear upshifts started feeling funny. It would shake a bit when going in gear, but I wouldn't hear any grinding... Now it grinds if I upshift into 5th from high rpms. I have to double clutch my upshifts to avoid it.
It took about 2 and a half quarts before manual tranny oil began to overflow out of the fill hole, wheres the helms manual calls for 2 quarts of oil. Is it possible that I overfilled it and thats the cause?
or is it just coincidence that my tranny starts to screw up after changing the gear oil?

well, i dont think you can mess up the tranny by changing the fluid. do you have an accord tranny? the lude tranny's are notorious for having crappy 3rd and 5th gear synchros. these cause the tranny to grind on upshifts. i think the problem may have filtered into the accord manual tranny. how many miles are on your tranny?
yea, i have an accord tranny. 147k miles right now.
What really bothers me though, is why it suddenly occurs right after changing my tranny fluid to Redline MTL. It did not occur prior to this, and I thought Redline MTL was supposed to be better for my transmission than many other gear oils.
Althou it could just be a damn coincidence, I'm trying to see if there are any other possibilities and explainations for this.

What year is your 'kord? There is a recall on some 5th gens to replace the 5th gear because of a grinding problem.
mine grinds occasionally now when i shift into 5th gear.... it too started to occur after I changed over to Redline. BG Synchroshift II is next for me!

are you sure you didnt put too little fluid in?
hmm you too? wow, thats suprising. I thought i had some freak case or something. What did you have in your tranny before switching to redline? I unfortunately have no idea wat was in there since I got the car only a year ago. If redline's the cause of it, maybe i'll go pickup some Honda Gear oil. =\
Was your car level when you topped off the MTL?
There is a TSB out there for 5th gear for some Accords and Preludes...

Yup for at least 6 years now. Just bought 3 quarts of it this weekend, at $23 a quart

My car wasn't perfectly level as I didn't have 4 jackstands, but it was very close. The diff between the front/rear raised height was less than an inch.
Either way, I used 2.5 quarts when the manual lists 2.0 quarts. Does 2.5 quarts sound about right?
and where can i find more info about a possible recall for it? And would they still honor it considering I'm well out of warranty w/ 147k miles?

Warranties have no bearing on Recalls. You can take your honda in with 400,000 and they will still do the recall for free. Call up your local Honda dealer and ask.
I had a thought about redline... Isn't it designed to replace gear oil which most manual trannys use? Honda trannys use 10w-40 motor oil. maybe that's why it started happening after you changed the mtl.
ive always been told that honda mtf is the best to run in honda trannies... just like honda oem pads wont squeek, but cheapy pads will.
don't run that redline tranny stuff. stick to honda MTL or at the least regular tranny fluid. this isn't the first time i've heard of people having problems after switching to redline.
Okay everybody, here's the deal on the tranny. I had that exact same problem 1 year ago. When I would shift into 5th, the gear would grind. Eventually, it got so bad I had to double clutch into 5th just so that horrible, horrible grinding sound wouldn't happen. I took it to the Honda dealer, and they took my tranny out, looked arounded and said that I needed a new fork and new 5th gear. They said the syncromesh gear had been chipped. The deal is that NO, it is not covered by a recall. Yes, it is a problem with ludes and accords, but once again, there is no recall issued by Honda mandated by the government. Now, i bitched at the dealer because my car had 34,000 miles when this happened, so they were nice to me and it cost me half price, which was still 700 bucks.
So, there's the deal. I hoped I helped. It's been 11,000 since then and I haven't had the problem come back.
Peace
