I thought it was clutch release...HELP!!!!
Ok, I have a 99 civic. Originally dx(D16y7), I swapped everything to ex(D16y8) except for the block. Anyways, I had this loud tapping noise that would only be audible at idle(WITH THE CLUTCH OUT) and around 3000 RPM, if you push the clutch in, the noise goes away. I immediately thought throwout bearing. I was wrong. I put a new one on and to my dismay to hear the noise again after I fired her up!!!! Now the noise has progressed and I can hear it with the clutch in, but only while car is moving. If car is still with clutch in, no noise, but with it out, it gets noisy. I'm usually an ace at fixing my car , but I got a stumper here. Only other things that come to mind would be pilot shaft bushing or the input shaft bearing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If someone had the same symptoms and the clutch release wasn't it. Please let me know ASAP. Thank you
COME ON NOW, I KNOW IM NOT THE FIRST PERSON EVER TO EXPERIENCE THESE PROBLEMS......PLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS EEEEEEEEEEEE

No, I did not replace the pilot bearing. I was positive to have the right diagnosis and it was pouring rain on me when I replaced the throwout bearing so I didn't look at anything. It seems to be coming from inside the tranny. Noise stops immediately after you press clutch pedal in. I believe it to be the input shaft bearing, just maybe someone else can help me verify it.
not sure, but it could be your clutch rattling. you said that it goes away when you press in the clutch. also the noise is coming from your tranny. my guess is there is something with your clutch? why this happened after you replaced your bearings is beyond me.
The noise was happening before I replaced the clutch release bearing. All symptoms pointed towards this. I have Centerforce Stage 2 clutch and pressure plate with around 15k on it. I dont believe the problem lies there, though I could be wrong. The car shifts great, especially with the new throwout bearing. Just this damn noise that gets increasingly louder, and I also have no choice but to drive my car. I can usually diagnose most things with my car and fix them with ease, although this problem presents further knowledge I guess. Replacing the entire tranny is probably what I'm going to have to do. Trans. repair shops told me it would be cheaper to buy a used one than to fix this one, or swap the gears into an old trans that came out when I bought it new. The gears are stripped in the other one so I doubt that I really want to swap them and put it back in. I don't know what to do.....lol....except eat a bullet!!!!
Also like I said, the noise is present when the vehicle is rolling also, whether the clutch is engaged or not. This is why I don't think the problem is with the clutch. My expertise seems to lay more with electrical diagnostics and parts changing, not transmission diagnostics...lol....wish me luck I guess
