Default how to find a short in my wire?

ok my car overheats big time in stop and go traffic or if i let it sit after i've driven it for a while. If im moving i can drive all day and she wont even touch half way on the temp guage. I already changed my thermostat and i connected my fan to a 12V source and it works like a dream (it better its brand new) The only two things from what i've searched is the fan switch located near the stat or its a short in the wire connecting the fan...either way how do i test these?

thx

btw i dont have AC

It's usually the fan relay. Try replacing that.
