Default EP3 K20A3 Vtec Actuation

I was reading about the K20A3 in the new Honda Tuning and I found out that the K20A3 has no Vtec actuation on the exhaust camshaft. I thought it has it on both cams but wow, the K20A3 is like Vtec-E. It runs on 12 valves under 2200 rpm, then 16 valves above 2200rpm, then it has the Vtec engagement but theres none on the exhaust camshaft profile. This just amazed me because I was planning on buying a EP3, now it has changed my mind about it.

That is correct.

You'll also hear that the K20A3 motor is a horrible motor to work on unless you pursue forced induction.

I believe ^^

It still responds decently to bolt-ons -- between 20 and 30 whp on mine, depending on whose stock dyno you believe. And if you're cheap on gas, the ability to run 87 octane is nice.

I'm curious: What exactly were you planning that you cannot now do?

I just thought that all Vtec dual cam honda engines have Vtec engagement on both cams. I want an EP3 because it's a hatch but I also want it to be quick. Most of my friends say that the EP3 is slow, even an Integra LS is faster. But If i did mods to the intake, Header, test pipe to a cat back, would it be alot faster than it already is or just a little bit? Also, does Vtec kick in hard or does it feel like a SOHC Vtec?

LMAO!!! I don't think so..first of all it all depends on the driver. Stop listening to your friends. Go drive the car before you make an opinion. Personally I own one and I can vouche that it IS NOT slower than a LS Integra. I've beaten modded GSR with my "slow" EP3. BTW Im stock with only an air filter.

Theres no real 'kick' like most other b-series motors, but the motor pulls much harder in the lower end. Stock for stock an ep is about the same as a gsr and responds pretty well to bolt ons. Your not going to get a 13 second ep without boost or swap though.

VTEC is VTEC, but they're not all the same VTEC. Hondata has a concise writeup on the differences between the K20A3's econo-vtec and the K20A2's performance-oriented vtec.

The thing is, all of these i-vtec motors can continually adjust the cam & spark timing and overlap throughout the rev range. These aren't as peaky as the B-series motors. Even the torque curve on mine measured out to be near-flat from 2000 rpm to redline, and that's without any ECU work whatsoever.

Our US-spec EP can be plenty of fun. If you want it to be crazy fast, there are plenty of things you can do. I'd think of it as a modern-day EG hatch.

Hopefully ep's don't get as much attention as eg's. I think they are getting so played out anymore. I'd take an ek/ep over an eg anyday anymore. I'm just tired of seeing the same ones over and over. But done right, i still love them

well, ive Just bought a 2002 EP3 Civic Type r, pick it up on Friday, I will let you know what its like next week. I test drove it and can honestly say that the vtec doesnt kick in as aggressive as the old B series motors, but it has tonnes more bottom end power, and still pulls real hard after 6000rpm. I didnt get much of a chance to sink my right foot to the metal, but hopefully soon i will. I would still advise anyone to get one.

Lucky bastard, you got what us Yanks are trying to make for ourselves... lol

I'm willing to bet that the "vtec kick" doesn't seem to "kick" so hard because the K-series motors do have more oomph overall. Plus, the constantly-variable cam timing helps to smooth out the torque curve and cam changeover.

I'll tell you what... if you're genuinely disappointed with that motor, I'll trade you mine.

Another one of my friends owns a Matrix XRS and he has never won against me.. i got videos of me racing the Corola XRS and i can get the videos of me racing the other two...LMK if u wanna see em...

Now these roumors are wrong..
I have an EP3 Civic Type-R (200 BHP) and after 6000RPM the VTEC does kick in!
Not so effective like an Integra Type-R VTEC kick but its still brutal.
Definately not a bad engine.. And it has a beautiful sound as it draws the air in. Btw it is totally stock. Get one, you'll like it. (6,7 sec 100km/h)
