bigger wheels for Accord
I have a '99 Accord LX w/ 15 inch steel wheels. I'm very fond of the car, but I wish it handled just a little bit more like a 3series. To that end, I am considering switching to 17 inch aluminum wheels, but am concerned about unintended consequences. I mean, I know that if you put a V8 in a Toyota Echo or a Chevette, stuff would break because the car just isn't designed to take that torque. And when I tell him what I want to do with the car, my best friend responds with a story of how he wanted to change something on his telescope and found after he did, that he had to change a whole bunch of other stuff because the scope just wasn't designed for the change he made. Any advice? Thanks.
you are right, when you changin the wheel you are not changing the wheels alone.
just to keep everything simple, if you changine to a bigger wheel, you need to run a "thinner" sidewall tires so the overall diameter stay the same(with smaller OEM wheel and bigger tires)
for example:
your factory oem wheels is 15 inch by 6.5 inch width
the tires is 196/65/15
IF you change to a 17x7(popular no hassle size for most accord)
you will need a 205/45/17 tires
the new setup will be very very close to the oem spec, 45series will be slightly bigger than oem size but it's so small of a change, your suspension, abs, and probably your butt couldn't even tell the difference.
and btw the wheel you have now is probably aluminium, the steel are the black ugly thing honda put some plastic over it

Thanks for the info... and, uh, my "peeping Tom friend" is actually a highly skilled amateur astronomer who cofounded the local astronomy group in his city.
