Are 90-91 Civics lighter than 92-95?
Which hatches are lighter? I already know for the 92-95s, the CX is the lightest, but is it lighter than a 90 or 91 hatch?
I need to know soon so I can make decision and get a hatch for a project car. Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure that the earlier cars are much lighter. You know what? You should get an 86 Crx si if you want something REALLY light. PLop in a B16A and run mid 14's with a stock motor.
Well the 92-95 cx/vx are 2035 give or take a few lbs. but the 90-91 dx are about 2127, and the si are a lil over 2200, but the std is lighter like by 10 lbs so around the 2020 area, but on the other hand you can go with a crx or the 88-89 model civic or crx 88-89 are the lightest years for the ef. I've done alot of web research and this is what i've come up with. I'm not 100% sure but i'm like 95% sure.
My Si with the B16a weighed 2350 without me, 14 tank gas and no back seat... Talk about a portly car!

those numbers for the 92-95 are way wrong, that site needs to be fixed
I went to autotrader.com and used their reviews section to check the gross weights of all the civics/crxs from 89-99. The lightest is the 92-95 cx, lighter than the crx. My si gutted with a welded cage with me in it was 2260, portly...maybe, but...I have a sunroof!! hehe!
omg! my 90 si (b16a equipped) weighs like 2410 full interior and a speaker box with 2 8-inch subs...i wonder what how fast i'd really go if it were oh 200-300 lbs lighter...haha....
Tortex sorry to correct you but that's way off!! THere is no way rims with tires can be that light. The lighest tire itself at least ways 15 lbs and that right there is allready heavier then what you stated. Anyways the vx rims are 9 lbs. minus tires.
No. 1990-1991 Civics have those pesky door mounted seatbelts. These, along with all the extra bracing they require, adds lots of weight. If you want a REALLY light EF, go for a 1988 STD model. Honda lists the weight of this car at 1989 pounds without A/C. With A/C and a B20, my 1988 STD weighs 2120 pounds. I don;t know how the other guy got his 1990-1991 STD to weigh only 2025 pounds with A/C.

The seatbelt mechanism weighs in at about 8 pounds each and the HF has the same mechanism. The doors on my '91 DX weigh approximately 70 pounds, same as an '88 HF door that I almost bought.
I have my car ('90 DX) completely apart to paint it and I can't figure out what would account for the 300 pounds difference between my DX and the 88HF. I've heard more sound deadening on the DX/Si, but my DX had a little on the floorboards and some on the firewall, consistent with the HFs that I've seen.
The only valid explanations that I've heard are lighter/weaker front suspension on the HF and the possibility that the DX they weighed had an automatic and A/C. That still isn't 300 pounds.
I'd like to weigh my car and see where it comes in. Where did you guys weigh your cars? Anyone actually weighed an 88 HF on the same scale as a 91 Si/DX/HF?
Thanks
Ben

Your right, the door mounted seat belts don't really weigh anymore than the belts mounted on the body. The main reasons the HF is so much lighter is cause of the engine and suspension. The engine is something like 50lbs lighter than the DX/Si engine and the suspension has tiny front brakes. It's also got a smaller gas tank, and the bumpers are only rated for 2.5mph crashes instead of 5mph like the DX/Si. There's a few other things I can't think of off the top of my head right now.
The rear bumper bar (that bolts to the body) weighs 20 pounds, so I can see some room for improvement on the front and back.
This is where we are at-
engine/tranny- 50 pounds lighter
gas tank- smaller, but are weights given wet?
doors- same
interior- seats, sound deadening- 10 pounds MAX lighter
front suspension/brakes- ??
front/rear bumpers- 20 pounds combined
I have the whole front suspension out of my CRX at the moment, I'd be happy to weigh it if someone will do the same with their HF stuff. Weigh everything connected to the rear crossmember (including brakes, struts, steering rack, etc.)
Email me if you are going to do this to make sure we are weighing the same parts.
This is just kind of bugging me since I can't figure out where those 200 pounds went (diff between 88HF and my 91 DX).
I also have a theory that after you do a swap, the HF is the same weight (or very close) to the other cars- you lose the engine/tranny weight savings, and you lose the front suspension/brakes weight savings, and you are stuck with a smaller fuel tank for a thirstier engine.
Anyone want to weigh their swapped HF and compare?
thanks

Are you sure the 1988 HF doors are no lighter than your 1990 DX doors? And are you sure those were 1988 HF doors you were weighing. Because I can tell you for a fact that my 1988 CRX SI doors are ALOT lighter than my brother's 1991 SI doors were(when he had the car). I never actually weighed them. But you could feel a HUGE difference by just swinging my door and then going to his car and doing the same. I know for a fact that the doors on cars with door mounted seatbelts are ALOT heavier. Also, according to Joe Locash at Hasport, the B-pillars are also heavier on cars with door mounted seatbelts.
