Default Need new tranny 94 4d LX, and a few questions Options

Ok new here, thinking about picking up an old 94 LX in my area. I'm looking for a commuter car since I will be traveling about 40 miles one way. The LX is an Auto with the tranny going out. I'd want to keep it an auto for simplicity. Is there a cheap place that I can get one online?? A guy quoted me $700-800 for tranny and labor with a tranny that has less than 40K on it. I think that is fair, but just trying to see if there is somewhere I can save a few bucks, or if anyone in the Louisville, KY area can do it cheaper.
Also, I'm looking for mainly good MPG and maybe a little more pep. What are some good mods that will give me a little better MPG if any, but I'd like the car to stay as low key as possible, ie. not loud exhaust, less tunerish, if that makes since.
thanks
joey

lots of people just throw those tranny's away. you could find some one to do it for closer to 500 if you search and ask around
