Found a good deal on a 1988 CRX HF. It has 130k miles on it, has a sun roof. Guy says it runs and idles perfectly, good interior, car is stock. Has a tune up and new clutch (5spd).
Quarter size rust on rear quarters (I can handle fixing that).
What should I do first?
I will ask about timing belt (when last changed) and see what docs he has... he's had it for six years.
However, I have a brand new timing belt and water pump from Advance that I didn't put in my old CRX. It has 5 spoke wheels it looks like, that are probably 15 inchers.
What else should I look for? I asked for the vin (carfax) and pics of the rocker panels + drivers/passengers floor pans just to be sure. Interrior is all there. I will check the back for leaks (I can do tail light seals, they're easy).
What should I look for? Emissions output from last inspection? Should be fine, mileage is pretty low... I'll check the oil and tranny fluid, see what they look like (I'm a n00b but I know what neglected fluid looks like).
Hints/Suggestions? Really want a CRX back

88hf = 50 CITY, 55 highway, according to fueleconomy.com or some site...
anyway...
If he did a normal tune up, it should have new
Distributor Cap,
Distributor Rotor,
Spark Plug Wires, (better be OE or similar!)
Spark Plugs!
That's what a tuneup is to me... oil and filter, tranny fluid, rad fluid I will ask about when last replaced/flushed. and brake fluid! Should be done every 2 years regardless, I bet MANY are negligent on that... (myself included!)
p3
Keep it coming.

I bet in a couple of years everyone's gonna be swapping those 70 hp 8 valve engines into their cars because of the rediculous gas prices.
I can see it now: Check out my EM1 w d15b1!!!!

If it was my 88HF, I'd lose the heavy 15s and get something light, HX rims, 15" Rotas, 13's.
I put GSR rims on my 89HF and it hurt my mileage and acceleration.
I'd replace the O2, put in a KnN, get an alignment, inflate my tires, maybe get a small tube header, and start loving the MPGs.
There's a thread somewhere else about a guy doing a MPG build up.

I have 14'' CRX Si (89) with four dead tires on them... Those would be better (aluminum), right?
p3
(when I get the car, g0d willing, I will post the info about the wheels, they could be light weight already).

I'd run the Carfax report just to make myself feel better that is is a true HF, I've seen too many (ok just 2) CRX's advertised as HF's but when I ran the carfax reports on it, sure enough they were DX's, not HF's.
Again it will give you peace of mind that it's not salvaged and how many owners it's had and if its had any troubles passing emissions or safety inspections. Might not be a great deal afterall after you know all that. Anyway if you don't have a carfax account, check around and see if anyone else does, I don't but I found a person advertising on NY's paper (and I'm in Cali) that they'd give you a one carfax report for $1 or 5 for $3, so I paypaled them $3 and I got all 5 carfax reports...well worth it in my opinion!
Good find, but you will have to be driving and shifting like a grandma to get those mpg figures...lol! Good luck with it, take some pics and post when you can, it would be interesting what people are getting for how much and in what condition. No amount of describing beats a real pic!

I carfaxed it, it had failed emissions at 37k miles and no problems since (tested right after and passed)... Yeah I drive like a grandpa anyway...
The MR2 is the fun car anyway, till I have the money to mod up the CRX =P
