Default ignition timing markings on flywheel? or crankshaft pulley?

subject says it all folks..

can anyone tell me where i can find these markings (ie which tell how many degrees the ignition timing is off TDC)

i've read for the prelude, its on the flywheel...how would i access that?? (where is it located physically)...i know for the integra, there are 3 markings located on the crankshaft pulley(representing 14deg, 16deg, and 18deg)...with a marking on the engine block as a reference point

any help would be much appreciated

There's a rubber plug on the front of the engine on the left of the headers by the engine code. Remove the plug and you can see the flywheel. There also what looks like a gun sight. The sight will line up with the TDC and timing marks on the flywheel.

thanks man

i'll have a go at it...

do you know whether there is any difference to engine layout...being that i'm from australia and its a right hand drive here?...also me using the jap spec h22a

this may seem like a really stupid Q but should the flywheel location differ? ie right side instead of left?

The engine layout is exactly the same.

ok guys...ur probably sick to death of this...

ok i found where everything should be...
when i was adjusting the timing today...i pointed my timing gun at the flywheel...i could see the 3 marks - the middle one with 15 on it

how ever, i dont know how to look through the gap in the block at the flywheel to get a proper reading...ie i try to judge by the marker on the block against the markings on the flywheel...but obviously the value differs depending on what angle i'm looking at these two references from...ie if i look at it from a more vertical position it looks as though it advance close to or past 17...if i look at it from a more horizontal perspective it looks like its lined up as 13deg.....\

can anyone tell me what is the correct way to look at the marker in reference to the flywheel markings?

thanks

Oh, did you remember to jump the service connector before you set the timing? it doesn't do anything unless you jump that baby.

I had my flywheel lightened and the silly bastards machined the timing marks off of it! I have no idea where my timing is, I just set it to what sounded the best..

yeh i shorted the service plug

but again..not sure how to look at the marks to give a proper reading...*shrug*

and i'm not sure what 'pinging' sounds like...so i dont really want to go by sound..although when i first advanced it 2mm...the engine got 'spluttery' at 6500rpm...when i was revving it in neutral.....

so i figured that it didn't sound right, so i retarted it back

If you look around in the timing window you'll see two things sticking out that work like a gun sight pointing at the flywheel. The second one is a point and the first is a V shape. You use these to target the correct point on the flywheel.

What he said! Also, remember that if you are standing at the RH side fender (passenger side in North America, Drivers side down under) looking at the distributor, turning it clockwise retards it, and counter-clockwise advances it.
