Default Backfiring/Stuttering With Rough Idle And Jumpy Speedo

Hey guys/gals, have been having a few problems with the teg and need your help. Here goes:

Got the car in Feb of '05. Had starting problems. Alternator went bad. Changed it. They sold me a bad one. Changed it again. [] Since then, the problem went away, but still happens once in a while. Dunno why. Had 2 diff electricians go through the wiring. Both came up with nothing. Used to have a system. Nothing big. 600 watts. Took it out. So far so good.

Now, a few weeks ago, the teg started to idle rough. The problem is intermittent. One time i start it up, runs fine. I drive it around all is well. Get to a light, and while im ideling, i notice the speedo twitching from 0 up to near 20 and then down. The idle drops from 750 down to 500 then back up to 800rpm. Temp gauge also climbs slowly. Then back down. I also hear backfiring/stuttering from the exhaust inside or outside the car. it happens about maybe every 2-4 seconds, i hear a dull thud.

Note that this happens at when the car is warm, at idle, and it feels like during these, power surges, when the idle drops, speedo twitches, and the exhaust stutters, it feels like the car is only running on 3 cylinders.

Car has 127,000 miles.
The car has just a catback. Used to have an intake.

I have changed the sparkplugs (under 3 months ago), sparkplug wires (4/20), fuel filter(4/19), thermo, alternator, battery, battery terminals (clamps).

I have yet to change dizzy (or just cap and rotor) and check for a vacuum leak. What could be wrong?

I've been told it could be the fuel filter, dizzy, wires, plugs, timing, pcv valve, vacuum leak...Car throws no CELs...

Thanks for your help and let me know if i missed something...

*Update*

Ok, i took it to a shop and they checked for vacuum leaks. They couldnt find anything, but they said that there may be one under the Intake Manifold in the IM Gasket. And to check, they would charge $400 to take off the mani and crap.

The idle is getting worse. It seems as if the car is only running on three cylinders at idle. Kinda under load. Although the shop hooked it up to a reader and NO CODES! We checked for spark all cylinders are firing.

Crap. What do you guys think? Bad IACV even though i cleaned it or a Vacuum Leak?

Also, what are the chances that this could all be happening because of a bad/going out Distributor?

Please help! I need this fixed before i sell my car!

It could be your ICM or Coil in your dizzy. That would be my best guess, as it would lead to the symptoms of your car. You can check the Coils resistance using a volt meter set for resistance. I don't know if this would cause the gauges to adjust.... My buddies 91 LS does had the same problem with his gauges, yet to figure it out. All in all, good luck man.

IIRC, When my dizzy was messed up and my car wouldn't start. I had some crazy issues like that. Then again my tranny ground and alternator weren't hooked up right. I had some stupid issues, very easy fixes, its just you always look for the worst, and overlook the simple fixes ;D You'll get it figured out eventually man, i'm sure its something stupid. Do you know anyone with a dizzy you could try? Worth a shot

sounds like the ignitor in the dizzy due to the jumpy speedo...

i had a similar problem with my car, and i replaced EVERY part in the dizzy, but it turned out to be the wiring and sensor in the dizzy that was causing the problem, so i had to buy a whole new dizzy. Lets just say that it wasn't fun having my car towed on 3 different occasions just to diagnose the problem.

jumpy speedo- vss
jumpy tech - icm ( ignition control module) or bad distribitor coil
studdering/ missfiring - dizzy or spark plugs or wires or distributor cap or coil
back firing - dizzy or plugs or wire or dizzy cap or coil
car cutting off at a stop - Icm or distibutor coil

if you need any more info IM me
Icm and the distribitor coil is the most important part of the distributor, if that goes bad like it does numerous times in honda's your car will not start point blank, give you butt load of unnessary problems. start with the dizzy and work you way back to the spark plugs and wires.

also you dont have to go out and buy a new dizzy unless you balling, but go the junk yard and just pocket stuff you need, if you had a 90 teg obd-0, then i would ship you like 10 icm's.
ive been thru them all trust me
