Default Thoughts on my "old man hot rod" FI project?...

I have been dreaming about building a hot rod ever since I started getting into cars. This isn't something that I would be doing right away however, but I will definetly be building this.

The plans:

- The plan is to start off with a 37ish ford roadster type of chassis and body. instead of using the typical small block V8, I would be throwing in a fully built F20C with an aftermarket trans and a GT42R turbo setup. I'm not 100% set on the 37 roadster body right now, but I do love how it looks. I've also been thinking about just a basic 32 ford punkster open wheel chassis.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts are. I have yet to see a hot rod that utilizes an import engine, let alone a turbo setup.

Screw a dinky 2.0, put something like the trailblazer's 4.2 litre inline 6 in there, or a 2JZ-GTE, or an RB25/26. A 2.0 with a GT42R isn't the most fun thing for boulevard cruising on saturday nights.

I've seen tons of hot rods with turbo setups, but not using import engines.

I agree with this - forget the 4 cylinder, go big for a hotrod! My next build will be a built, boosted small block chevy for sure.

I'd say go with a 2jz like said earlier.

Good luck with it

Ratrod FTW! My next project is going to be a bare bones, no frills ratrod. I heart them.
Turbo the V8. It'll be so sweet, make awesome power and not as bastardized as a 4cyl. hotrod.

But bastardized is what makes old hot rods and rat rods cool. Small block chevy in a 37 roadster? Yawn. Twin turbo inline 6 in a 37 roadster? Nice.

I think it would need some torque.

put the supra engine in it, I think its called the rb-26, then a monster turbo, make like 900 hp, yea old guys will be pissed when you blow their doors off with an import motor.

But bastardizing between domestics is different than mix and matching between foreign/imports and domestics. They don't fit quit the same.

rb26 is one of the skyline motors...2jzgte is tt supra

2jz would defintely be the motor of choice for a project like this

I'm kinda confused, the whole purpose of these cars is to look and sound fast. Nothing screams I"m fast like a lumpy v-8 idle and a completely chromed out engine bay, It doens't matter if it's got the stock super restrictive heads and 8:1 compression, it sounds badass. A turbo 4 is defeintly different, but do you really care if it gets better mileage? more reliable? and lighter? I"m not seeing this as a performance biased car. It won't be able to hang wiht the imports, and the big domestics will disown you the moment they hear 9000rpms of Honda.

Just my opinion

Do it bryson, that would be so sick, and much respect for doing something different. I always wanted a 71' Plymouth Barracuda with a 2jz...might be fun.

I've thought about that, but for a punk rod I think the motor would just physically be too large. it really depend on what chassis I would end up going with. I want something decently small. I hate huge street rods.

The 2JZ is definetly a possibility. it would sure as hell fit a lot better than a turbo'd V8.

If anyone is wondering what a punk rod looks like, its kinda like this...

lol...the "purpose" of these cars? Huh, I never knew these things had a purpose. But no. The "purpose" for me for building this, would just to be able to build a hot rod (what I've always wanted to do), and do it using a power plant that no one could have expected.

It wouldn't be a race car (obviously), nor am I trying to make it the fastest thing on the planet. More of just a little fun origional hot rod to take the GF out on the weekends

He is trying to do something different that surprises people, not some ls2 rehash, what do you think people would say when he popped the hood and saw a ls2 sitting there, I think it would be something like "oh cool another ls2" then they would walk away. oh and for the record, the 2jz is not ***** or bullshit, its proven itself to be more than worthy, dont go hatin on **** you dont know about.

**** being different man...serioulsy, when you have options as good as an LS(x)...why worry about anything else?

they're cheaper, just as strong, and more capable than a 2jz will ever be.

holy crap bryson...i've been planning this project in my head, and pricing it up, for 2 years! i thought i was the only one.

mine will be built in the next 4 years hopefully

i had thought i would do an s2k powertrain, but i'm leaning towards a nissan vg30 v6.. insanely cheap and tough engines.

awesome post man.

Good luck to you with your build.

And since everyone is already naming off the hotrod they would like to build, I want to build a s2k powered Lotus 7 (lo-cost).
