Default Misshift--now what do I do?

I fucked up yesterday and shifted from 5th to 2nd and the needle was bouncing off 10 on my tach. I know it was stupid, please don't yell at me!

Now my gears don't go in as smoothly as they did before, like they're really sticky. My clutch seems ok but gearbox is sometimes very unwilling.

Also, my motor seems to be idling a little bit rough. There's also sporadic tapping sounds (doesn't sound like valves--but I don't know) at idle.

Will transmission fluid help the stickyness? At high revs it seems to be going in fine.

Did I fry my clutch? Cause it seems ok, I'm just worried about my motor, maybe have the dealership check it out? Thanks.

oh man and you JUST got your R too...

I have also done the 5-2 downshift, but I always noticed that the car was taching up way too quick and pushed in the clutch immediately. Get it looked at...you might have some problems.

clutch should be the last of worries

do valve adjustment and compression test first then go from there

damn... a 5-2 downshift?! I've done a 3-2 at redline cuz i miss shifted going into 4th... but i was driving an RX-7 with a tough gear box and messed up clutch... haha i sent the rpms up to like 8700 rpm... but that rx-7 took it, blew out some smoke, and kept on running strong!

my friend did the same in his celica and killed it...

Get it checked ASAP

I did the same in my Gsr 5th to 2nd at 100, I had no rev limiter .

Surprisingly no bent valves, did a compression test and had like 140 in a couple cylinders and very loud metal tapping sounds from the head. Took apart the motor spun bearings.

It is a very expensive thing to fix as well.

A rev limiter makes absolutely no difference in a misshift anyways.

Take the car to the dealer or to your mechanic if you don't do you own work. Otherwise, tear it down.

This isn't a warranty item and unless the dealer is a bunch of complete morons they will not fix it. You admited to making the mistake, but now you'll have to pay for that mistake, and it might be pretty costly . for admiting to it though, x 4,000 if you do try to get it fixed under warranty.

Get or do a compression test and a leakdown test heres a link to do a DIY leakdown test:

Sorry to hear all that, especially since you just got the car.

A.

I think most miss-shifts are caused by improper hand position on the shift ****. The palm should be on the top of the shift **** for proper 4th gear shifts.

Wow, already. How dare you misshift the R that was supposed to be mine. I would never have made that mistake . I would defenitely take it to Acura and have it checked out. At this point, anything is better than continuing to drive it.

PS
I saw the previous female owner of your R a couple of weeks ago blasting down the street in it. I saw the car, then her, then I heard the engine blare. I bet she got quite a bit of "use" out of it. LOL, and we all thought that women drivers are more gentle on their cars.

I always wondered how people do this.

I assume everyone uses the same method for shifting:
UPSHIFTING:
1-2 pull straight back
2-3 push straight forward
3-4 pull straight back
4-5 push forward and right

DOWNSHIFTING:
5-4 pull straight back
4-3 push straight forward
3-2 pull back and left
2-1 push straight forward

Do people have different styles of shifting? Can someone who has misshifted please explain how it happened?

You probably bent some of your exhaust valves. I've seen more than one of these where I work. It's funny watching a guy try to deny that he mis-shifted when everybody involved knows that he did. And he knows that they know. FYI-Acura bought a couple of these repairs knowing full well that the customer f...ed up. But there is now a policy of NO!!! warranty on mis-shifts. Be prepared to spend some money to fix your engine.Sorry about your misfortune, everybody makes mistakes. Hopefully you will learn from yours.Good luck.

I mishift all the time. **** happens when your driving hard. I dont thinks its as black and white as "hand position". When your driving hard you shift fast, sometimes you just miss it. DOH

As for when your racing someone or just fooling around you maybe nervous or whatever, then your more prone to screwing up.

Shifting is an art.

Well, I'm beginning to think that my clutch is the only thing fucked up. The motor is running fine now, no weird noises. I had a second opinion from a friend who told me that if my valves were bent, the car would be running like ****.

He also told me that the noise the car makes when the clutch is pushed in all the way is the clutch bearing (which is fucked up).

Anyway, I'm taking it to the Acura dealership today, wish me luck--btw what should an R idle at?

I think it's the angle of the arm. If you have your elbow kinda angled from the shifter it and you pull straight back--that straight back is angled going toward second. I'm going to try to keep my arm angled parallel to the center console so that pulling straight back will go to 4th, not 2nd.

Well there are different idles, at least that is my case. With no other electric flutuations, ie. headlights, fans, ac, you should idle around 800-900. With the headlights on you should idle wround 1000-1100 and when i have everything on(headlights, fogs and AC) Im around 1200. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!
