Looks pretty good. I agree with RTernie about the lense...but i think that cup youre using should be fine. Just hold the torch above the weld for a second after you extenguish the arc.
And i would turn the heat down a **** hair and use a little more filler. Youre cutting into it too much right now. Were the pipes beveled? If so then you never want to bring the arc to the landing(top of the bevel) on a root. This will give you an inconsistant overlap on the cap and weaken the weld. Good luck man...looks like youre a natural

thanks, I'm going to the welder's supply today to purchase a glass lense. The pipes were beveled, so I'll try to keep the arche away from the landing also.
Thanks for your comments so far
I'll make a couple changes and see how it goes

haha, I will tonight
I went to the supply store today and this is what i got. They didnt have a "glass Lense" but said i coudl order one. What they had was a "Gas Lense". Would this work better then the normal style collet body /cup Ive been using?

Lookin better man
It almost looks like your weave is inconsistant from top to bottom(on the cap). It looks like youre cutting in on the top, then getting non-fusion on the bottom. Youre most likely staying too long at the top then pulling the weld pool to the bottom then back up quickly. You need to go to the top and stay until you see the filler melt in...then slowly drag to the bottom and watch the filler melt in...then go back up and keep repeating that process. You can tell by the shape of the "stacks" in the weld that youre moving at an incosistant rate. But this all comes with practice.
Try not to focus too much on technique at first. Just do what feels comfortable until youre used to it...then start on technique. Getting comfortable with holding the torch and the wire is the first thing you should concentrate on. When i was first tought how to weld the guy made me hold the torch a certain way...and i SUCKED. I was so shitty that i almost quit. Then one day i said expletive IT and held the torch a different way. My welds looked 1000x's better and i actually came from behind to finish all of my welding tests before anyone. Being comfortable is the key to making pretty welds.
BTW-Your welds look REALLY good for a beginner
