Default Rear discs worth it?

Are changing the rear drums to discs in a 2g CRX worth it? I keep hearing that they are heavier and they don't help braking. Has anyone done any real tests?

Thanks
Ben

Well, it depends on what you are doing. For autocrossing, rear drums can actually be better because they have less unsprung weight.

Discs overall usually have better stopping power and they look cooler

good luck,

I'd do it jsut because the pads are so much easier to swap than Shoes...

But I did mine for e-braking around corners, doin the FF Drift thang, yo!

Nah, I did it for the look, and stopping power!

man almost everybody just said they did it for looks...and that's the ONLY reason to do it.

for the price you pay, they aren't gonna stop that much better. when i installed mine, i noticed literally NO difference. in fact when i was riding around on one rear disc and one rear drum, the disc locked up before the drum.

although i do agree with they are easier to work on. way easier. but still to me that alone isn't worth it.

save the money and get a bigger front brake upgrade. that would look good AND perform better.

Civics, and rex's way next to nothing, compared to alot of other cars. Granted disks are alot easier to change, than drums...but if you put a bigger front brake on youll increase your stopping power as much as swapping your rears and it will be a lot easier. Remember, almost all cars have a lot bigger front bias when it comes to breaking.

Ahh the pain, the headaches that come with adjustig your F**king rear drums after you knock them out of adjustment, or replacing that stupid wheel cylinder...
Do it man. Live the early CRX dream and get rear discs. You'll be happy you did it.

Yeah, I remember a TV commercial in the early 90's: "...so fast it has 4-wheel disc brakes, so serious it only comes in a stick - the BMW 318is - $21,000". Well same for my CRX Si, but for 1/2 the price.

P.S., didn't the 90-91 Civic Si HB also have rear discs? I recall it was pretty identical except for body and rear seat.

According to my Guru-who road races a CRX Si - put the money into a good set of stainless steel brake lines instead. Remember that the rear brakes are not as heavily used as the fronts. I have a 96 Civic HB set up with stock size everything, AEM pads and powerslots-rear drums, Goodridge-does it stop YES! Just my experience. My 89 CRX Si will be done the same way.
