Default Here's a good question

Ok, I was driving home on the interstate with the cruise on and a CD fell off my dashboard. Just by reaction I went to catch it but knocked my AT shifter into Neutral. The engine almost redlined and in the confusion I actually shifted the thing into reverse. Mind you I was going 75mph while all of this was happening. My friend who was following me said he saw my reverse lights come on. Can any of you explain why I didnt mess up my automatic trans by doing this? All of this happened about a year ago and things are still fine.

prolly cuz the little guy in your ECU said "to hell with that wtf is he smoking keep it in drive" and decided not to put it into reverse gear so no damage was done..... i could be wrong tho.

well if your tranny did not make a horrific grinding, wanna tear outta your car, kind of noise/sensation, or suddenly try to become road kill on the freeway. Then chances are nothing bad happened

most honda automatics have some sort of logic in them. If you drop the car into reverse it simply takes the input as a misshift (which in this case is exactly what happened) and ignores the request and will put the car in neutral typically. I wouldnt push your luck tho

the automatics are actually genius's...if you throw it in reverse like you did the engine will go into neutral...if you shift to 1st while going 65, the engine will keep you in third...and so on...the shifter won't even let you shift the car into park unless your foot's on the brake (that's common in most cars though)...i would advise against trying to back up while going 65 on the highway though!
