I was thinking about purchasing a 2000 PY ITR with 37,000 miles on the motor. the thing is it has a rebuilt title and im wondering if paying 14,000 is justifiable. there was NO frame damage, just damage to both driver and pass side fenders and drivers door. i guess that the front bumper was ok with a little damage, but they replaced it anyway. still has stock headlights, they were not damaged. its a long story how it got put as a salvage title. original owner didnt want the car back after it got into this accident so the insurance company jsut cut him a check and bought the car.
the pictures that i have of the car (the damage) shows all of this. i cant however post them on here because they were printed out for me. im just scared of the resale value if i were (heaven forbid) to decide to sell the car in the future
i drove the car and it drives smooth and everything is cherry. interior and under the hood is super clean. just wondering if anyone had any imput, or ever ran into this problem themselves. TIA

My advice would be that if everything seems mechanically sound that chances are it will still hold value due to its condition. If bolt on parts were the only things damaged then it would not deter me. When you get into Quater panels and floors and whatever else you know of that is a weld in part you run the risk of the corrosion protection being compromised. Like I said if everything seems ok then go for it.
That seems a little high for salvaged title. For a few grand more you could have a clean title one with no doubts about it.
There a alot of rebuilt R's being sold up here in WA, I was faced with the same situation. It just felt right to wait and find find that clean one
Have no regrets

Very interesting thoughts... the thing is and why im considering this so much is that the guy that is selling ive known for ahwile. hes a mechanic and buys cars and fixes them up, so i have no reason to believe hes lying to me or not telling me anything. thats why this is even a more difficult decision. the salvage title does scare me, but the excitement of owning one also is there. its such a hard decision! its so purdy
.
keep the inquiries coming! Id liek to see what everyone has to think!
thanks

Even if the car were in better-than-showroom condition, I'd still turn it down because of the salvage title. Many issues could come up:
- registering the car
- insuring the car (many companies won't go near a salvage title, and even if they do, you may get liability only).
- if you do have a claim, your insurance company may deny it or pay less since it's a salvage car
- if/when you try to sell the car, you'll have a harder time due to the title

haha funny. actually ive made my decision and i have decided to pass on this one. unless he comes down in price a few grand, its not worth my effort or time to worry about what problems may occur with the car. thanks again for everones imput, greatly appreciated!

why in the hell would you buy an ITR with thoughts of selling her, and shy away because of what's on a title. from your description it sounds like it had minor body damage, $14,000 seems like a pretty good deal to me
whatever though, to each his own

i dont get how damage to just the fenders and door would salvage a car. usually the damage would have to be greater, meaning more expensive to fix versus the value of the car. it doesnt add up. i guess it would make more sense if you elaborated the story on why the previous owner refused the car after the accident, but still i wouldnt do it...not for 14.

if the car is clean now, and all the repars seem good, then why not? i would not pay as much as a clear title, but perhaps 70-80% of what a clear title would get would be fair.
this is provided the seller has pictures of the incident, police report and documentation of the car being fixed. its hassle on your part to ensure the car was fixed properly so make sure you reflect that in the offer price.

hey brew...i was in the same boat as u a few years back. i came across a 1998 R with a rebuilt title.....car was beautiful and i ended up buying. as far as insurance went they insured me no problem. also unfortunately for the white dragon it ended up getting stolen. as for what insurance gave me i was 100% satisfied. the gave me 12.5k, considering that i bought it for 10.5k.
if i remember correctly, how insurance came up with that figure is that since it was a salvage/rebuilt title, they gave me 75% of what the 98 R's were going for (this was about 3 yrs. ago).
anyways if it checks out fine, like mine did, then i would go for it, however i think 14k is a little too steep.
btw mine had about 42k miles on it

hmm interesting, well u guys really make this hard for me because u guys are pretty much split on the whole ordeal. i think i probably will pass on it unless he comes down to liek 12k ish or something. its so damn hard to find ITR's in wisconsin or the surrounding states though, thats why its so hard passing on it, whether clean title or not.
