auto tranny fluid
i want to change the fluid out on my 93 wagon accord, and cant seem to find any diy with pics. can anyone help me out, i am not sure how this is done, and i dont want to take it to jiffy lube. Where to drain the fluid from? how many bottles of auto tranny fluid do i need to fill it up again? thankss
There is a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission. I think you need a 3/8 " drive to remove the plug. You may want to use a new crush washer when re-installing the plug. There is a magnet on the plug (to catch small particles that float by. If it has never been changed there will probably be a wad of it on the magnet. Wipe the stuff off the magnet, put the plug back in, and fill the trans back up. You have to fill the trans through the dipstick hole, so you will need a narrow funnel. Use only Honda ATF-Z1 (no additives). Should not take more than 3 quarts, but you may want to get 4, just in case. If you don't use it this time, you can always save it for the next change. Anything else? Good luck
PS: You may want to measure how much fluid drains out, so you will know about how much to pour back in. It can save you the constant dipstick checks

I did this about two weeks ago. It is really simple. First, jack up the car by the front tow points. Place the jackstands under it for safety reasons. Then, on the inside of the passenger wheel there is a place to unscrew the drainplug with a 3/8 ratchet. Unscrew and clean up the horrible mess that may be on the drain plug's magnet. In my case, it was a horrible mess. Then, replace the plug, refill tranny, constantly checking for fluid to come upon the hatches on the dipstick. Once you see the fluid in the crosshatch area, lower vehicle and start it. Shift slowly through all gears and repeat about 2-3 times. Then, drive around happily with your new fluid. Or, if the fluid was really bad, you can repeat the process a few times to make it even better. In my situation, I ordered a case of 12 bottles and I repeated the process twice last week, and I am going to do it again in soon to make sure its nice and clean.
yeah, i am gonna do the same. i put some other atf oil in instead of the honda that everyone recommends. I just picked up 8 bottles, and will do it 2 more times. The magnet was a mess and a half, that **** looked like don kings hair, only in silver metal particals. anyways thanks for the help guys, appreciate it

I meant to get 4 quarts just in case 3 was not enough. My new Accord says 3.1 or 3.2, but it only took 3 also.

fill the trans up until the Full mark is reached. Start car, let it warm up and move selector through all gears. Turn off car and check again. if needed add more fluid.
