Default Started making CRX bass tubes (pics)...

OK, so I started step one of making some CRX rear bass tubes. I took out my rear speakers and lined the whole area above the fender with a hefty bag on each side. I then mixed about 250 ml of each part of the 2 part expanding foam from TAP Plastics into another bag and slid it in there and let it do its thing . I had to take all the trim peieces out of the back to get the damn things out, but this will be my starting point to make a mold for fiberglass.

The next step will be to shave down these foam plugs so that they are the same shape and size and that they will install through the speaker holes. Then I'll get them smoothed and bondo'd up. I need to find a set of speaker mount plates (the thing behind the trim panels) so that I can jig up a mounting plate for these things. I'll keep this updated with pics as I progress. Here's a pic of the plugs in raw form right after removal and pealing the hefty bag off:

I had the exact same idea a few days ago. I was going to use that foam at Lowes, "great stuff".

Now you need to figure out the volume of your final shape so you can figure out what size speaker will perform best in that enclosure. I'm thinking it'll be 5.5" since that's what Honda ran in their tubes.

Keep us updated!
Make a second set for me.

Too much to read? WTF? Maybe you need to spend less time with your coloring book....

Then again, that was in the late 1980s/early 1990s. One thing that has REALLY changed in the last 15-20 years is the amount of airspace that a speaker requires has come down DRASTICALLY. I remember back in 1990-1991, an 8 inch sub needed about 1 cubic foot of airspace. Nowadays, .25 cubic foot is enough for an 8 incher.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm going to start shaping these tonight so I'll probably put some more pics up after that.

As for the comment about speakers needing much smaller volumes, you are absolutely correct. I want to definitely run as large a speaker as possible in these enclousres (will probably end up being a 6 or 6.5").

As for the foam, if you want to try this, DO NOT USE GREAT STUFF. That stuff sucks for several reasons:
1) It doesn't expand for **** (maybe 2x to 3x times volume)
2) It NEEDS oxygen to cure so it never really sets up if you spray a shitload in a cavernous space such as this project

The stuff I used can be purchased from Tap Plastics (http://www.tapplastics.com/). It expands about 30x volume!!!! Yeah I only used 2.5 100ml cups of each part and BOOM! . And it sets up rock hard in like 20 minutes. Awesome.

If I can get a good mold made from these plugs (which i suspect should happen), I would definitely consider making more sets if people want to buy them. Once again, I will keep this updated as I go along.

see i tried that method already...thats why i havent been posting anything about the bass tubes yet...see the problem with using that foam is that the fiberglass eats through it...so i already had my foam piece ready...layed my fiberglass down, and the damn thing melted...so thats why i am going with plan B ....pvc pipes..i already have the back part of the tubes done, all i have left is to make the angle going to the front...i will get it done though

Well I have definitely made plugs with this method before and I am not even close to done. I have to shape it, and bondo the whole thing. There will be a shitload of sanding and then a few coats of paint and some waxing and mold release.

try wrapping the mold in foil (lot of it) and then Glass over them (of course using mold release) it shouldnt melt the mold and should come out looking nice

Well you can bet your *** i'm going to put quality speakers in there. Having a sealed enclosure will definitely make a difference.

I'm going to flush one 12" sub into the rear floor. where spare used to be. Maybe even just make fiberglass box to fit inder false hole in floor covered by carpet to deter theives

Its not, except I think these will be sealed (although they could be ported). The only difference is that they tuck neatly away in the area above the fenders and are completely invisible when installed.

If I feel like I need a sub, I will install it in the same manner. The small cargo space in the CRX is too precious to be taken up by a bulky rectangular sub box.

What about wraping that in a plastic bag then placing fiberglass on it? Does fiberglass eat through plastic?

Update:

I did some ROUGH shaping today and successfully got both sides to fit into the cavities. I had to make them a lot smaller than I thought, but they both do install through the speaker holes, which I think is important here, so that no body panels have to be removed. Tomorrow I will start sanding to get them both smooth and the same size/shape. Then it will be bondo and more sanding for the plugs. The most annoying part has been that there is still some hefty bag material totally squeezed inside the foam. I call it a bag wedgie lol but it is damn near impossible to pull out so i have to just cut with it there and deal with it.

Here is the foam after the rough shaping (lots of material removed to make the bastards fit ) Note that the black line represents the perimeter of the hole that these things slide through on the trim panels:

The body filler and stuff I'll be starting tomorrow:
