cat is to decrease emissions (catalytic converter)
resonator is to decrease noise

a side effect of a cat is that it also decreases noise too

catalytic converter is used to burn the remaining hc's that are produced as byproducts of combustion.

a resonator has to do with quieting down the exhaust.

2 seperate functions.

Aight, thanks a bunch, makes sense, when I gutted my cat it was louder, and it leaked, but was needed as it was so jammed up it blew the gaskets in front of the cat from the pressure and is still leaking like a *****...now i can plug the exhaust and it doesn't stall, it's great.....I g2 get a new exhaust.. (this is for my probe)...

I'll probably get a resonator for my civic then, because a cop can nail me for it being too loud in NY, but since it's a 95, they can't nail me for emissions, thanks all
