Default timing odd!!! do u know??

i had to adv. my dizzy all the way just to get it to 18 degrees before TDC. it is on the center line of the 3 grouped together on the crank(i think that is 18). and that is with my dizzy all the way adv. so i thought my timing was alittle off. so i retimed my car again. it is dead on and the same exact thing is happening. i have to adv my dizzy all the way to get it to run at 18 degrees TDC. what is doing this. The only way I can get the ignition timing within spec is to advance both cams (otherwise the car won't run - check engine light, etc.), but when I do this, the TDC marks are completely misaligned and I lose a lot of top end power (probably because they're now too advanced).

You have to remember, all of these motors are USED and you have no way of knowing what's been done to them previously. I'm thinking that my head was previously milled some amount and now I need adjustable cam gears to compensate for the altered timing belt geometry.

help anyone this sucks i have no power and its not the dizzy i dont think its new.

I assume your distributor is advanced all the way till you can move it no more and you still dont have the timing mark lined up. I would suggest firstly, make sure you bridged the wire to bypass your ecu, or your reading will be incorrect. If you already did that, double check that you are lining the proper marks up to tdc. And remember to disconnect the jumper wire from your ecu afterwards. If you still cant get the timing after this, I can only suggest that your belt has slipped a tooth or something. Hope this helps.

what kind of car is it you have got mate? I know civics and crxs have the service pin connector located under the passenger side footwell, beneath the glove comartment. You will have to feel about for it, there is 2 multi plugs, one with several holes in it, and one with only 2 pins in it, this one is the 2 pin service check connector, you need to bridge the 2 holes on this connector in order to set your timing. any questions, please just ask, cheers.

after you bridged the wire, when you started your car, did you make sure that the engine warning light was on. If it isnt you havnt bridged it right. Like I said just loosen your 2 bottom bolts on the distributor, and have the top one just partialy tightened and tap it gently until your timing is set properly. Im sorry if what i have told you isnt working, Im afraid i cant help you any more, cheers, let me know if you get it.

Your timing belt is a tooth off. It is not the "wire bridge" that is the problem. When you line the 2 marks from the cam sproket to the top of head, remember the motor is mounted leaning a bit toward the front of the car. A common mistake is to set the cam sproket level to the ground instaed of perfectly level to the head. ALSO.... when installing the timing belt, you should "thread" it on from the crank sprocket, pulling it tight over the cam sprocket first, then taking up the slack on the tensioner side. NOT the other way from the tensioner over the sprocket then down to the crank sprocket, this will often mistooth the timing belt.

Good luck,
BW

you have to have the engine warm, start the engine, disconnect the wire then time it and then plug the wire in and then shut it off and start it up again and then check it.

Warm the car up, shut it off. Disconnect the battery, advance the distributer then reconnect the battery and start the car. Then check your marks.

If you are at TDC or before TDC then I bet your cam timing is off by a tooth. I've heard of people jumping teeth but I have never seen it. So check the belt out.
