hmm...weird thing...should i try this on my trannies?
the current tranny in my 90 crx hf makes a loud ticking noise when i release the clutch pedal and goes away when i step on the cluth pedal...i searched and it ended up being the input shaft bearing? so i bout a 88 crx hf tranny...stupid me, that i didnt know it wouldnt fit because of the spline count difference so do you guys think that the input shaft bearing in that would fit into my 90 hf? i would just swap the 88 tranny in but i would need a new clutch disc and flywheel and i dont feel like spending that much on a daily driver.
Bearings are the same between years.
The spline counts on the two mainshafts (aka input shafts) transmissions are different. The splines on the shaft interface with your clutch disc. So you have two options. You can take advantage of the old shaft using your old clutch or you can use your new shaft with a new clutch for an 88 hf crx.
Since this just started your existing shaft probably isnt damaged at all so I wouldn't worry too much about being forced to replace it. But the only way to know is crack open your tranny.
I did this last week and I decided to go with the higher spline count shaft and a new 212mm clutch/flywheel for a 92-99 civic for better friction. Theres a post on spline counts do a search.
Also, when you pull your transmission and before you take it apart check your throwout bearing for clicking. That may be the issue. If so you don't have to do all that work for nothing. You can just buy a new clutch kit for $100.00 and that comes with a throwout bearing. Not worth it to buy the bearing by itself you'll pay $30 bucks or more.
Good luck!
