grinding into third
hi there every1, a quick question. when Im downshifting into third at a pretty high rate of speed I notice that no matter how far I push the clutch in im always grinding it in unless I move very slow and carefull. is this just a clutch problem or both tranny and clutch? thanks

Yes like said already it's your syncros going. i would try and not downshift at a high rpm like you are doing as it's only making it worse. try rev matching more offten and it could cure your 3rd gear grind. eventually you will have to replace the syncros as there is no other real way to fx the problem.

There is your solution. There is never a need to white knuckle the shifter and "ram it into gear". Be gentle with the thing. Hell, you should be able to shift into any gear with only 2 fingers.
Oh ya, and to slow down use your brakes rather than your tranny. New brakes are a cheap 1hr job, a new clutch is a much more expensive ordeal. Just my 0.02
Cheers

like everyone says its most likely your syncros, try changing your tranny fluid with gm syncromesh I think penzoil makes one to. Its a band-aid fix but lots of people have had grinds disapear at least for a while by doing that. You are going to evantually have to change the syncros though.

So, press clutch, neutral, release clutch, match revs, press clutch, shift into gear, release clutch.
Common misconception is that you merely match revs with the clutch pedal pressed....that still uses the syncros and you'll still probably grind.
I always double clutch when downshifting, and it goes in smooth as butter. Without double clutching, it would never go in to gear.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Exactly, so called "rev matching" will only save your clutch.
