Default when to change oil?

my aunt has a 93 accord automatic, and the last time i changed the oil till yesterday was 1/2 yr. i checked the mileage i wrote down on my notepad and it was a bit less than 1000 miles (984 to be exact). she drives it like 2-3x per week, only for her part time job, the other job is a few blocks away. She has to have the car because its a overnight night job, no busses operate that late.

so when exactly should i help her change her oil? every 3months is overkill i tinhk, and when i checked the dipstick the oil is still very clean. im thinking about avery 9 months or so, bacuase literally she drives like barely 2,000 miles a year. thanks

it's not overkill, it's every three months because the oil gets loaded up with water from all of the short trips (engine never really gets good and hot)...

another thing to consider is that oil doesn't have an eternal shelf life; it does break down ov er time. I have not been one to changeoil every 3K. Actually most manufacturers recommended a change every 7,500 miles as late as the early 80's! But I always buy high quality oil, and never go over 5k.

Having said that, with so little driving, I wouldn't worry so much about every 3 months on the button, but I would never go more than 6 mo. regardless of miles driven. Granted I'm just a shadetree maechanic, but I have worked with enough techs that I feel comfortavle with the longer times.

Honda actually reccomends changing oil every year if the car does not reach 3,750 miles in that time.

My 2005 coupe has about 9k miles on it (total) and I haven't changed the oil since I left the dealership. Guess I should?

Yea the oil change interval is 10K miles on all 4 cylinders and 7,500 miles on V6 models. (unless it has the maintnence minder)

I think my final decision is every 9 months.. which is about 1,500 miles. she bought the car for 4 years.. has put 8000 miles on it lol. i hit 8,000 in a matter of like months

i went to the dealer to change the oil for my 06 at 6K and oil life was at 40%. and they told me to come back when the maintenance minder reads from 5-15%. this is awesome.

I go with 3,000 miles for the oil change interval. Honda's milage interval seems a little much. But as far as the time between changes, I would go by whatever the normal conditions interval is. I would have to look that up. It should be in your owner's manual.

your engine will not last as long as it should if you wait this long between oil changes............

Also,, think about something?? how does the computer know that you have 40 % life left ??? mileage you say ??? ok,,, well, what happens if someone does mostly city driving ?? doesn't the engine still run at stop lites and the odometer will not go up ?? so odometer could read 6k,40% oil life ,, but has the engine been running only for 6k ?? interesting question ...oil could be dead and buried by now ..

Change the oil at no more than 3.5 k .. your engine will last a lot longer ..,,it only costs around 25 dollars

Engine oil, every 3,000 miles. Transmission fluid, every 15,000 miles. It's like "cheap insurance". With the close tolerances of these engines and transmissions, I don't want any dirty build-up. Sludge = Bad

Speacking of sludge.....
I was wondering if anyone had that thing done where they drain all the fluids out of your engine and run this cleaner/degreser stuff there there for a few hours. It's supposed to get rid of all that crap (sludge/buildup) and make the car run a lot better. I can't remember what it's called, my uncle had it done to his car a year or so ago and swears by it...but he's not known for making the best choices about his cars...

what they do is thin out the oil with kerosene and the kerosene dissolves the sludge...you have to let the engine idle when you add the stuff and you let it idle for about 10-15 mins after you have warmed it up.

Actually the ECM takes readings from various engine sensors that determine the oil life depending on your driving style and enviornmental conditions. And from my experience it has been pretty close every time. I have never had a car with this system have burned smelling or otherwise bad oil at a service. But a car that is overdue always has burned smelling oil. So it works, please don't assume it doesn't until you understand how it works.
