MiniMe or DOHC ZC setup for a 91 CRX Si?
Hey all..
I've been reading all the articles in the FAQ and still have a question on which way would be the better way to go. Currently I have a 91 CRX Si. Everything is stock. I live in California (not sure if that matters or not (smog)).
I was wondering if I would get more HP out of a Mini-Me setup or would I get more from a full DOHC ZC engine swap? If the ZC swap is just a little more HP than the Mini-Me, then I'm guessing it's probably not worth all the extra cost and labor/time to do a full engine swap when I could just do a head swap.
If anyone has any insight on this for me, and could compare the two as far as project size/time to install goes, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Really.. Could you give me an idea on about how much a Mini-Me would cost as compared to what a DOHC ZC full swap would cost?
If I go the Mini-Me route, I'm guessing that I could easily do that all myself, get the parts a little at a time, have the valves all done up, and then one weekend do the swap. I have air, air tools, and all that stuff so it shouldn't be too hard I would imagine.

I would do a dohc zc engine,,then chip the si ecu with dohc zc timing/fuel maps ..
Or if you do a minime setup get a d16y8 head so you can use your stock obd0 dizzy/setup..Then chip the stock si ecu with sohc vtec maps and make it control vtec using turboedit..

Wow, that's sweet. I was thinking like $600+ or something. Should I just start calling up my local junk yards for the head or is there a preferred place on the net to buy this stuff from?
I also have a question about the VTEC switch. I see there is an inexpensive RPM switch that will trigger the VTEC at a specified RPM. Why is it beneficial to use a real VTEC controller instead of just this cheaper RPM switch? Don't they both do the same thing? I guess what I'm asking is whats the benefit of using the real VTEC controller over using the cheap RPM switch?
Thanks for the info man, I appreciate it. I'm all excited about giving my CRX some *****. heh

You have to get a vtec ecu or chip your ecu with different maps,,Cant just use a rpm switch because thats not really vtec..Use your stock si ecu and chip it with turboedit ,use sohc vtec fuel and timing maps and also control vtec using turboedit..Or convert obd1 and use a p28 ecu..Try and get a d16y8 head if you want to stay obd-0 becaue the stock obd0 ecu bolts right up to that head..

A long time ago I took my ECU apart and installed a socket where the PROM goes. Currently I have some modified ROM in there that gave me a little extra power. Since I already have a socket in there I can just pop in whatever chip I want.
Where do I get the SOHC VTEC maps? Is this just another PROM that I would plug into my ECU? Btw, what is turboedit?
Is there any web sites I should be reading to educate myself on this stuff? I don't want to keep asking all these newbie questions if at all possible.
