What does the series of block mean, like 5 milloin series
I here people say "its a 5 million series" when talking about there blocks, like a b16a. I know that this is the serial number under the engine code stamed on the block. I assume it has to do with when it was made (i think)... My b16a is a 1 million series, its like 1026262. I was wondering if there is anywhere that has a breakdown on when it was made or anyhting else that may make a diff to me, like is a 1 million series older then a 5 million series? Is a 1 million one of the first? I have tryed to search and could not find anything. Thanks.

5 Series is the second gen 92-95 motor with 170HP. The first gen the 1 series is your 88-91 JDM civic/crx engine with 160HP. You are better off getting the 5 series and no your engine is not rare. You would much rather have the 5 series. The 5 series are OBD1 and and if I am not mistaken they have just a **** hair difference in the cams giving it that extra 10 HP.

HOW TO TELL WHICH B16a YOU HAVE
Most people know there are two first generation B16a engines, both with 160hp.
The 1million series and the 5million series. Meaning the engine number starts with either a 1 or a 5
The 1million series were avliable in the Integra XSi and RSi from 1990 to 1991. And I can confirm there
was an Auto option.
The 1.2million series was avliable in the 92 XSi and RSi, and was also avliable with an Auto.
The 5million series was in the Civic and CRX SiR, and no Auto was avliable. However when the 5gen
Civic was released the hp was upped to 170hp, but the engine numbers continued on starting with a 5, and
other than some visual differnces it can be hard to tell if you have a 160 or 170hp engine.
Well here are the numbers after the 5-
50 1990 160hp }
52 1991 160hp }4g Civic/CRX SiR
and
54 1992- 170hp 5th and 6th gen SiR, SiRII and CRX delsol SiR.
Identifying 1st and 2nd generation B16A
The legendary B16A is the first engine to use the VTEC mechanism. Appearing in the JDM
DA6/DA8 Honda Integra RSi/XSi in mid 1989, the 1st generation B16As produced 160ps at
7600rpm with a max torque of 15.5kgm at 7000rpm and a redline of 8000rpm. This engine was
later 'migrated' into the EF9 Civic and EF8 CRX SiRs.
In 1991, the JDM DA6/DA8 Integra RSi/XSi again became the first models to receive the
revised 2nd generation B16As. Getting a slightly higher 10.4 CR with different pistons and
slightly wilder high cam profiles, the 2nd generation B16A produces 170ps at 7800rpm with a
max torque of 16.0kgm at 7300rpm and a redline of 8200rpm. Again this engine later migrated to
the EG6/EG9 Civic and EG2 CRX DelSol SiRs. It continues to be used on the EK4 Civic SiRs in
Japan and selected Asian markets.
A frequent question asked to TOVA involves how one can quickly identify the version of a
B16A engine, ie whether it's the 160ps earlier or 170ps later generations. Again the most
definitive way would be to break into the engine and take a look at the pistons and other
mechanisms. However in Malaysia, because of the great popularity of engine swaps using
imported 'half-cuts' (ie front half of an accident car containing the entire engine bay), a simpler
method has been devised to identify the version of the B16A. This involves looking at the valve
cover, specifically at the DOHC and VTEC words.
For the 160ps version B16A, the DOHC word will be larger than the VTEC word while the
reverse holds true for the 170ps version B16A. Other helpful identifications include looking for a
'PGM-Fi' plate on top of the intake manifold. The 160ps B16A will have the PGM-Fi plate while
the 170ps B16A will not.
However, TOVA cautions that this is a quick and general guide and will not be fool-proof. There
have been cases reported of half-cuts with a B16A with 170ps type valve cover but on an EF8
CRX SiR body (which is not supposed to have received this engine at all). Some says that the
last few production EF8s uses the 170ps engine while others feels that perhaps the new valve
cover designs were used to save production costs. Similarly, some DA6/DA8 Integras may be
running around with the 170ps B16A internals but with the older 160ps valve cover designs.

Wow! If you are right then I am running a PW0 ECU OBD1 without having to rewire anything. Interesting. Here's what I have heard. 5 Million series is not necessarily from Japan. It may be from the UK CRX. Still a 1.6 B16 motor with 160 HP.

This same question was just in Honda Tuning. There response was that the 5XXXXXX came from a Civic or CRX and the 1XXXXXX came from Integras.
