Default HOW TO** Convert 89 NS cluster to function on 89 ND

This is going to be my very first write up on how to convert a 89 Civic Dx cluster harness that originally had a ND cluster and make it so that its is possible to use a 89 NS cluster. A main difference is that the driver seatbelt light is inbetween the coolant temperature gauge and the gasoline gauge.

in 1989 they made 3 different clusters that i know of:
NS
(Nippon Seiki)
one with a third plug on the back
and another with only two plugs on the back

ND
(Nippon Denso)
only had two plugs on the back

As you can see both of these clusters are from 89 CRX's the cluster on the top with the light green and copper colored back is a NS (Nippon Seiki) and the cluster on the bottom that is a darker shade of green all around is a ND (Nippon Denso)

When i converted i notice the ND harness does not have a DOOR open. That wire would normally go to A12. Also I forgot where the YLW wire originally came from so when someone converts their harness please let me know which wire it is.

A1 is to the left of the plug when the wires are facing you. B1 is to the left of the plug when the wires are facing you. Also to take out the plugs i used a small flathead screw driver and pry up on the tabs. everything else is pretty much self explanitory!

** = Extend wire and I recomend that you solder the wire and tape it up with electrical tape to prevent a short circuit and you could ruin your cluster if you dont tape up your exposed wire.

Original ND Cluster ==============>NS Cluster
A12 (BLU/GRN) – Left Turn signal – A1
B5** (YEL/RED) – Speedometer (Bottom screw) – A2
A12 (YLW/GRN) – Coolant Temperature (Bottom screw) – A3
A3 (YLW/WHT) – Fuel gauge (top screw) – A4
A4 (YEL/RED) – Oil pressure light – A5
A7 (RED) – Cluster lights (positive) – A6
A6 (RED/BLK) – Cluster lights (Brightness control) – A7
A9 (BLK/YLW) – Switched power to – A8
A10 (WHT/BLU) – Battery light – A9
A8 (GRN/ORG) – Check engine – A10
A11 (BLU) – Tachometer – A11
NONE - Door open - A12

B1 (BLK) – Ground – B1
B6 (RED/BLU) – High beam – B2
B7 (GRN/BLK) – Trunk open – B3
B4 (GRN/RED) – E. Brake light – B4
B2 (YLW/RED) – Speedometer (Bottom right screw) – B5
B3 – Empty – B6
YLW wire – Switch power to cluster – B7
B8 (GRN/YLW) – Right turn signal – B8

I would not have been able to make this "HOW TO" without the help of dfwaccord and wood 1

Let me know if their are any mistakes as this is my first write up!

also Wood 1 is trying to get his account back i believe his original SN was "wood" so if someone could help him retrieve his old SN.

yhea i finally got it to work!

88-91 clusters are difinitely not plug and play. especially the 88-89 clusters since two companies made different clusters!
