how long will my transmission last?
I just picked up this b16a 88 crx si.. it had a slight grind going into 4th gear.. above 7k rpm and grinds in reverse about 25% of the time.. ( 1 time it did something very shady, hit 7k rpm in first gear, it scratched and stopped pulling, i quickly went to second)
So.. I decided to change the transmission fluid today.. I picked up 3 quarts of Penzoil Synchromesh MTF... the fill bolt was a bastard to get off, but I finally got it.. went for a drive.. drove really lightly on it for about 60 miles (took a mini road trip) then I decided to let it rip and see if it helped with the grinding any.. well not only did it not help, it actually made it worse .. I hit it in first, it did that shady **** mentioned earlier again right at 7k, went to second( with a new grind), hit 7k again, did the same thing, hit 3rd, same thing again(grinded into 4th) .. going to pick up some Honda MTF tomorrow.. it seems like penzoil made it take a ****
i have deemed this transmission fucked, so i gotta drive it like a normal person now and shift around 3k for the rest of its life.. since i do need it for transportation.. how long do you think it will last?

Hey I am not sure if that fluid is right... It may be but I have always just used and the manual calls for motor oil... like run mobile 1 synthetic 10w 30 it that gear box. If you want, I have a Y1 Cable witha Quilfe LSD (shortest geared cable tranny for b-series) or a A1 integra LS Cable tranny for sale. Check on the fluid, also is you clutch adjusted right, since it grinds in most gears, mabey the clutch isnt fully engaging.
Never run synthetic fluid in an old gear box. Sorry to say, but our syncros aren't the strongest of them all, and removing friction only makes them worse. Syncros depend on friction to stop. When they can't stop (worn out) they don't catch and release a gear easily, thus you must grind the syncro to a stop and grind it into the next gear.
Rebuild your tranny and it will last you alot longer. Do it, B16A short gears are the best.

I run Pennzoil synchromesh and have no problems. It's the SAME EXACT stuff as GM synchromesh. The oil is not your problem, the tranny is. I'm all for tearing apart tranny's and rebuilding them. It's easier than it appears........well, to me it was.
Get some gearspeed synchros and throw them in. That should take care of your problem if the synchros are the only thing worn out.

I know its the tranny(forgot to mention its a Y1 w/ LSD, it chatters bad), I thought maybe the syncromesh would bandaid it a little, you wouldnt even know the transmission was messed up if you drive chill.. probably going to get a new transmission once my tax returns come, or rebuild.. not sure yet.
