Default slightly burning oil, switch to 10w40?

sup guys,
my turbo LS smokes some at idle, and sometimes when backing off the throttle and letting the revs die down (while in gear, under load). right now i run Modil 1 synthetic 10w30. i was thinking about switching to 10w40 to see if the thicker oil will help the smoking some. do you guys think this would help? what about 15w50? to thick? or would it help?

also just a quick little question. i was thinking about also trying castrol syntec instead of mobil 1,any of you have an opinion on which oil is better?

alright, here's what happened to me.......i just bought a d16z6 civic about 6 months ago.....switched to castrol syntec full synthetic, and it burned oil a bit.......decided to go with casstrol high milage, and it seemed quieter, and burned ALOT less oil........i'd stay with the same weight, and try a high milage oil....try that first.....my opinion...

Is your oil return able to drain properly? What kind of condition is your turbo in? These could all be reasons why you are smoking. Possible ring or valve issues can cause you to burn oil as well. How much oil are we talkin about here?

Check for the most common signs of oil burning before you band-aid it with thicker oil. Personally I run 20w-50 in the summer because I can't get any kind of oil pressure with thinner oils when it's so hot out.

Either blown turbo seals, or valve seals are worn and in need of replacing.

Just fix the problem, instead of trying to mask it.

Backing off the throttle while in gear isnt good for your oil pump. you should go in neutral.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Could you explain why?

the smoking issue is either my valve seals are going,or oil gets slightly backed up in the turbo and oil gets burned. we arnt talking about alot, just when i first start it,it'll smoke moderatly until fully warmed. so about 1/2-1 quart per oil change im burning. turbo is fairly new,not even 5K on her yet,and i just got my forged internals put in about 4-4,5K ago. im not trying to mask my problem at all,i know basically where its coming from (well its either of the 2),im just trying to slow the burning of oil.

This makes no sense at all, your oil pump is run off the crank, so wether its turning at 6500rpm under throttle or off throttle its still turning at 6500rpm.

I wrote that at 4 am. I meant the tranny, it usually puts excess load on the tranny especially at high rpm when you back off and throttle and let it coast in in gear. its better to go in neutral thats what I was thinking when I made the comment.
