Default Gas mileage

Right now I'm getting between 420 and 450 miles to a tank of gas in my '91 accord LX. I'm wanting to push it to around 500. Is this possible and if so what would I have to do?

Check your ignition system
Check your spark plugs (especially the gap)
Check your CAT
Check your tire pressure
Check your piston compression
Check your trunk, if there is lots of junk that you don’t need throw them away
Change your driving habits (don’t try to show off too much) this will save some gas

DANG! I drive a '91 Accord EX and I'm doing good to get over 400 miles/tank. Of course I do drive either 75 or in stop and go traffic. Based on my experience I wouldn't try for 500, but you are already doing better than me.

I get around 30 MPG in my 91 LX in the winter (denser air = more fuel) and usually around 33 or 34 in the summer. This is all with 277k on her.

the only way you are going to get 500 out of a tank is by to get over 35mpg on 14 gals of fuel that is not possible in these cars with any type of city driving involved

These cars are rated 24/30 and I'll give you my 94 car stats whick is rated at 23-25 and 29-31

around town
I get around 24-25 and on the hwy I get 32-34.XXX

I'm guessing he is doing mostly highway driving because of the 32mpg he is already getting.

There are ways to increase the fuel milage. All of them I can think of require aftermarket mods. I haven't had near enough caffiene this morning so I couldn't tell you names.

The newest one I have seen I can't even remember how it works, except that it was pushing 2 or 3 more MPG on the Chrysler Sebrings. The other one has been around years and it adds a mist of water to the fuel before it gets to the engine, thus burning a little water instead of fuel and lowering the fuel usage. Although with the water one you have to fill the water tank occasionally.

Instead of looking at how many miles you get per tank, pay attention to how many miles you actually get per gallon.

Next time you fill up... reset your trip odometer (or write down the mileage). Let it get low, fill up again, divide miles traveled by number of gallons you just put in. For a better average, do this a few times and keep a cumulative mileage.

I get 28 in town and 34 highway doing 75-80 in my 98 lx 4dr 5speed.

Would it be worth while to add an intake to get better mileage. I also have a dc coated header from my 94 ex laying around If it fit would it be worth my while.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone has done any mods and noticed an improvement in mileage?

Drive 55 on the highway, and if you have a manual shift at like 2500 rpms.

get a civic then. if you want more fuel economy, thats the way to go. no matter how hard you try to save gas (drivng slow, take off weight) you wont get the gas mileage of a smaller car.

isn't bad to push it by driving until almost on fumes? do the fuel pump need to be submerged with gas in order to keep cool and not burn out?

Yes it is bad to run your car to almost empty. Your fuel pump has to work almost tiwce as hard and eventually lead to failure if you do it enough times.

That's bull on the fuel pump going if you let it go empty a lot, I've had a 93 since it had 36,000 on it, it's now got 334,000 miles and I let it go till the light comes on and then try and push it as far as I can, original fuel pump still in it. more times than not the light was on it seemed.

Not sure about your tank but my 93 has a 17 gallon tank in it so technically you'd need to get 29 MPG to get 500 miles on the tank, it's dooable but like they said you gotta drive like a granny and do 55 on the highways. but you can do it.

I have an 05 Civic now and can do 500 miles on a tank and it's only a 13.2 gallon tank, the Accord was a bit quicker but with gas as pricey as it is, I'm lovin the civic. Plus only 37,000 on it instead of the 334,000 on the Accord. I love my honda's

I'm more than happy to listen to reason so please explain how the pump would need to work twice as hard to pump the fuel.

How the hell are you getting 36mpg?!! Even on the Highway! I have the same car (with four banger) and the best I ever got was like 25...

'91 EX coupe, 249,500 miles. Recently got about 26, regularly cruising @ 80mph on the freeway and usually semi-hard acceleration at times. I'm about to get some more stuff done to it so maybe I can get just a bit better mileage soon.
