Buying used, not installed B16
What is the best possible way to test out the motor if its not installed in a car. I wanna buy a B16 from some guy on the local forums but I wanna know what I can do to not get punked....Anyone?
First thing I would do, is pull the dipstick and if it smells sweat walk away, and get a baseball bat, and kick his *** for trying to sell you a busted motor. Second, crank the motor over with a wrench, is the engine cranking smoothly? It should'nt be making any noises, finally just ask a ton of questions, and point out stuff that's missing or damaged, and that will bring the price down. Goodluck and let us know.
Oh and have a flash light to look inside the cylinders through the spark plug holes!

I don't know much about compression testing, but I think it can be accomplished with the tester and a wrench, just turn the engine a bunch.
Yep..I did a compression test this way, I had a trans on the engine also though. I was told that compression testing a cold engine isn't as reliable but I don't know if this is true or not.
pay for half of it and when its installed and running good then pay the other half. If it ends up being a bad motor then dont pay for the other half or see if you can get your money back. But have a contract

That's a good idea for the buyer but if I don't see any seller going for that, legit or not.
