Cleaning my tranny
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to clean the outside of my tranny. Its all greasy. Almost looks black. I'd like to clean it before I bolt it back up. I've tried engine degreaser and it didnt help much. Is there any other spray solutions I can safely use. I know I'll probably get roasted for this question, but is hot tanking it a possibility?
Also its been sitting in my garage for almost 2 years now. Would cleaning the guts be a wise idea, or is it not really needed. This was running when it was pulled off. Any good shops to do this in socal? Thanks fellas.

you can hot tank it but you better tear it apart before you do it. BTW brake cleaner is best way to keep the gunk, grease off the tranny. That's what I used to clean my block and tranny with.
brake-leen or carb/choke cleaner just get like 4 cans and go to town, it should basically rinse everything right off.
I use brake-kleen so much i should buy stock in it.
Its always a big spending day when its onsale at the parts store.

An industrial degreaser will work if you scrub with a stif brush. Don't expect the oil buildup to come off just by soaking in degreaser and spraying with a hose.

My tranny was also black with crud. The inside of the bell housing was jet black and the sludge was about 1/8" thick.
I hit that **** with my pressure washer and it came out looking almost new. This picture kind of sucks, but you can tell how clean it got:

Before the pressure washer, I tried using Brake-cleen. That idea was horrible. The brake-cleen worked wonders, but to finish the whole tranny would have taken me about 50 cans. Plus I would have died from the fumes.
My advice would be to find someone with a pressure washer. Or buy one from Home Depot for $180 - It's one of the most useful tools I've ever bought.

Well what the heck do you want to know? Why would pressure washing those areas cause any harm? You can tell from my pick that I already pressure washed the inside of my bell housing.
