91 Civic Hatch Questions
Hey all. I'm picking up a 1991 Civic DX (?) hatch this week for $350 plus the old engine (see below). Didn't seem like a bad deal to me. No A/C though. I'm getting this as a commuter car (long drive to work). So it'll be stock......for now.
The guy I'm getting it from just got tired of messing with it. The orig engine has been replaced with, I think, another D15(B?) due to a hole in the block. The current problem is that the car won't idle correctly and has severe hesitation off the line. He said its got a new dist cap, rotor, wires & plugs. Anything else I should look at? Is it possible that the ECU isn't correct? I have no idea where he sourced the engine, but its supposed to be the same as what was originally in there.
He said its a 4spd tranny. I couldn't find any references to a 4spd tranny in a 1991 Honda Civic. The clutch has been replaced in it and he said initially they had issues getting the tranny (orig) to mate up to the replacement engine. Could I swap in a 5spd? What should I be looking for if I can?
What about a service manual? I saw that I can still get a Helms manual online, but it doesn't include any wiring diagrams. Are the Chiltons manuals just as good? I found a couple sites that have some wiring diagrams available for download.
I haven't gotten to look at the car yet (I know its in decent shape though). I won't be able to until this weekend. I'm just hoping to get some ideas from the gurus here on where to start. I searched a good bit and I've read up on my other q's. Just couldn't find the answer for these.
Thanks

A haynes manual should have some wiring diagrams in it. Its better than the chilton. You can swap in a 91 SI tranny or 91 DX. Also in that haynes manual is has a trouble shooting section, it may be able to answer your queston on why its hesitating. Could be clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump??? Anyone else can help me out on this one.
4psd manuals come in the "std" models..Go to http://hondahookup.com for a service manual..
the 4 speed STD model had a D15B1 engine - the 5 speed DX had a D15B2 engine - the D15B1 uses a PM9 ECU and the D15B2 uses a PM5 ECU - if engine was replaced with DX D15B2, you need a PM5 ECU to get it to run right
Thanks for the replies...

The engine/ECU issue would make sense then. Is it easy to source out a PM5 ECU? Guess I should look for an Si or DX tranny then huh?
Hopefully it will be in my garage this weekend. Provided I have time to get it there.
