Default 2000 Accord Transmission Noise

I searched and searched but didn’t find anything relative to my problem; my car is 2000 Honda Accord SE – Auto/T - 4 bangers 177K on it.

Now I have noise coming from Transmission, when I hit 2000rpm when it passed 2000 noise go away and if it’s below 1500 rpm then noise go away. It is almost sounds like hitting something on the Transmission Housing. It doesn’t matter I am in P,R,N,D,3,2,1 noise is present.

I never remove any transmission before, so I am newbie please help me, what the best way to attack this issue, should rebuild everything or just replace the Bearing that worn out, and how do I locate that bad bearing.

I have all hand tools / 4 stands and 3 jacks / Helm Manual, but no air tools, or should I take it to a shop (then again I don’t have much money to spent right now) please understand that - I am not trying to be cheap A**, I know that all mechanics deserve good $$$ pay.

At the moment car is running fine, is it OK to drive like this?

I do every Engine / Tranny Oil / Filters Change right on time everything else work silky smooth.

take it to the shop. Internal trans problems are almost impossible to diag. You can remove the inspection plate and see of there is something stuck up in there but I doubt it. Is there anything out of place in the engine compartment?

nothing is out of place in the engine compartment, everything in good order, except tranny.

Just now I talked to a shop mech. He says go with a rebuild one, cause once you open a tranny things always get bigger and bigger means more money.

I just can't belive 1 bearing make my whole trany go to bone yard. I must be able to replace this bearing.

bearing failure = metal in trans = clogged filter = eventual 2nd gear failure = new trans.

If the car is worth it to you, get your trans rebuilt........

oh man! what a formula.

bearing failure = metal in trans = clogged filter = eventual 2nd gear failure = new trans.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am going to crack open my tranny right now, lets see what has happend, see if I can rebuild my self. I talked to a bone yard guy (who is one of my buddy) said they got a low mill. trany looks brand new, but this car came right from Warden Collision Center (High way Accident) lol

I am planning to pull all Bearing/Syncromash out from that and put it in mine, I hope this will work.

I do understand that it'll be lot of work and pain, but I am willing to learn, then I know Honda Transmission.

OK, I found the problem, it was my cat but forgive me for not troubleshooting the issue properly, now Midas going to replace it with a affter market Cat for $460.00 Canadian.

1 more question; right now I am running with NGK Iridium spark plugs, so they make my cat fail ?

what spark plug is the best for my car ?

Alright replace the Cat, no more noise; I can’t describe how happy I am right now, only cost me 460.00 for Cat and 24.00 for beer.

ooh also install set of brand spanking new spark plugs (Honda genuine NGK) then reset the ECU. For additional insurance replace the Tranny Oil and Mobile1 synth Engine Oil again.

Car runs silky smooth.

Thank you, all for helping me, especially Honda Tech.com

STOP! aftermarket converters almoast always fail. Save yourself the money in the long run and get Honda!!!
Very few aftermarket converters are of any quality. Especially on a Honda.

oohh shoot I already installed the thing, right now its working fine, but I don't know about long run. if its last 3 years then its ok for me. because it's half of the dealer's price.

I love Honda parts, also I love dealers too (some none repoo dealers), but right now I can't afford them.

I came across your post while looking for answer to my problem. I also have Honda 2000 EX V6 with 170K on it. I always went to Honda dealership for even smallest problem. Now my car makes noise that you can call as loud hissing. It does not come all the time. Its most common when we step on the gas or for initial part of the ride. I off course took it to the authorized Honda dealer and was told its because transmission is failing and I can get factory refurbished transmission for approximately $2500 with three year warranty. When I asked the reasons why a transmission would fail, I was told usually its because of use of wrong transmission oil or no or delayed changes in the oil. Now what bothers me is if I always went to authorized Honda dealers, why should I have this problem at the first place? Second, for the same reason, is he diagnosing the problem correct? If the diagnosis is right can I go after Honda since I never went to non Honda dealers? Finally, at this mileage is it worth going through replacement or let the car go?

I would appreciate any inputs.

Shveta

Ah, the infamous Accord automatic. You can do all the maintanence in the world and these things can, and do fail at some point. If you do any searching on Accord autos, you will find many a thread on this subject. I won't say that all of them fail, as there are some Accords with 200,000+ miles on the original trans, but there are quite a few that do. I would try another trusted mechanic in your area for a second opinion. If it seems the problem is indeed the trans, you have to make a choice to replace it or buy a new car. This decision is purely yours. Economically, its usually not worth it to replace a trans on an older car, but if your Accord has sentimental value, then you might want to replace it. You can still get a lot of mileage out of it once you replace the trans, but once again, its up to you.

Worth $2500 to replace transmission? Here is my maths.

If you own this car from new, it may not worth spent $2500 for transmission. I assume you spent $25,000 in year 1999 to purchase this car new. On average, for nearly 10 years, the cost to you is $2500/year. It may not worth $2500/year to maintain a used car. A new car for 10 years, most likely is trouble free.

Transmission is a major repair, you may not see large bills after that, but for an old car, this assumption has risks.

If you bought this car used, this will be more complicated, depends when and how much you paid for it.

Thanks for your input. I bought this car new in 2001 and apart from this problem it drives good. I checked the current value of the car and figured the same that its not worth getting a new trans at this point especially what if any other problem comes up, then I have spent more than the current value of the car. I just changed the tires four months ago and last year in summer I got new battery thinking my 16 year old son will take this car for next few years. Now I have to buy two cars which is not easy in this economy. Another reason I am bugged is if I did not do any thing wrong and always went to Honda dealers for all major and minor services, should I talk to Honda?

No big deal man, drive it til it breaks and when it does tow it to your mechanic and throw a used tranny in there.

Problem solved, car good for a good while longer.

Sadly I haven't heard that they do anything for you besides offer to take your money and give you a rebuilt or new trans. You can give it a shot. I'm pretty sure there was an extended warranty given for these but even that date has passed on your 2001 I'm pretty sure. Was a 7 year, 70,000 mile I believe. Go ahead and talk to them, MAYBE you can get lucky and they will give you a break. Good luck.

Plenty of members have experienced that problem. The transmissions in the 98-02 Honda Accords have about a 50/50 chance that they will break since they were made so crappily.
My advice would be to sell the car. if you want another Honda Accord made between 98-02 buy one with a manual trans.Or you could pay for the repairs (if repairable) and install a trans cooler with the hopes that it would help.
