Default 1st time on slicks

Finally made it to the track with 23" M&H's on Lenso's. Wow.
That is a totally different feeling, actually "launching".

Best slip:

R/T .308
60' 1.857
330 5.109
1/8 7.660
MPH 96.37
1000 9.829
1/4 11.640
MPH 125.20

This was at 15lbs, and launching only at 4lbs.

My best 60' was a 1.7.

I feel there is alot of room for improvement, hopefully I can get into the 10's.

for slicks.

Basically what I did.....

1st pass
10psi in tires.
Good burnout.
Launch Limit set at 6500
Pre-load clutch.
Let out quickly, but not side-steppin
Run low boost just to get a feel of the tires at speed and the conditions of track, along with slowing down. Do not slam on brakes!
Hang on!

When you finish first pass, check air pressure. More than likely it will go up due to heat, adjust accordingly. Also double check lugs.

One problem I did run into was that the steering rod was hitting the balance weights of the wheel. This was after the first pass, and it wore a groove in the weights.

I found that I was shifting into second to abruptly. I ended up using speedometer to determine when to shift. I just let it bounce off the rev limiter until I reached proper speed. Once I did it a few times, I knew when to shift just by feel.

I noticed that the slicks were very senstitive to the track conditions. One lane at the track is somewhat sloped. When I ran in that lane, I had to fight the car to keep it from going in the wall.

Be careful and good luck.

Hi FyReo3: You are right, you do have alot of room for improvement. So hold on have fun, tighten down your seat belts, because you will be going for a ride.

Thanks John.....

Now if I can only remember to put slicks on in the right direction!

I ran all of my passes with them on backwards.

Not to thread jack but since John is in the thread and the topic was up might as well ask...

Why are the slicks directional? Sidewall design or something? What effect does it have on performance/safety?

i ran on slicks for the first time yesterday. ran a 12.1 best.

i was never the week before going, but when it came time... i just did what i had to do.

did a burnout... then preloaded the clutch (didnt even look at the rpm). slicks are amazing!! pulled a 1.7 60' on my best run...

Congrats to you man.

Why are you running 23" slicks w/ 621whp??

I figured I would start out with these. I'm not even close to 620 right now at 15 lbs., more like 450. I also need to change suspension to run anything bigger.

i asked john the same question its because when the lay the rubber on the slick it overlaps a little bit, and they need it to go in the proper direction or it will peel the slick. the way i might have explained may sound funny and maybe john could clarify it a little bit.

Hi Hybrid_Coupe: Thank You for the help. Yes you are right, that is why I mark the slicks to let you know right from left.

They are definitely addicting.... I do not even want to waste my time on street tires anymore!

I guess the only thing that will keep from from running them all the time is when tranny disagrees to them.

What are people doing to upgrade their trannys to hold up to the abuse?
