STAINLESS STEEL WELDING QUESTION
can someone please explain to me why u cant weld stainless steel.. tahts wat i heard but then again i got my muffler welded and it was stainless steel so how does it make sense....
i meant weld stainless steel to normal metal.... u have to do it in a special way can someone explain it to me... somethin like MIG is the wrong way to do but most garages still do it but wat does it mean y is it bad ?
Well you can certainly TIG stainless to mild steel...your weld will rust without protection of course. My boy used my MIG to weld his exhaust without telling me the midsection was stainless.....nothin but a bunch of popcorn, boogers and dicks.
if your mig welding stainless to stainless, you use 309 Stainless wire with tri-mix gas. If your welding stainless to mild steel(normal), you use 321 stainless wire and tri-mix gas.
Its not that it can't be done. They couldn't do it because they didn't have the necessary tools.
With TIG welding I prefered to use basically 308L all the time. It works great with mild, mild to stainless, and ss304/ss321. I've only MIG welded mild steel, but I'd imagine that you could use 308L wire with straight argon for those processes and everything would be dandy.
