Default Aw f0rk! Problems with tranny install.

Well after installing the jdm fd and synchro, i finally got the tranny bolted back up to the car (what a pain in the *** that was). I put on the shift rod, and test it out. To my dismay, I can only shift into 3rd and 4th gear. All the other gates start to go in, but never completely lock into gear. And I was really slamming on them, they just would not go.There is no fluid in the tranny yet (haven't put the axles back in yet), but I doubt it would change anything if there was.

Any ideas on what the problem could be before I take it back out and open it up again?

I haven't tried it yet, but someone suggested turning the shafts a bit. I might get lucky and that will allow those gears to lock in. I thought maybe putting in an axle and turning it a bit in 3rd or 4th gear might help, but I think I'd probably have to have someone hold down the clutch.

Ya try that. Probably the gears aren't meshing because they aren't moving. Good luck.

This is why I never recommend someone to jump into serious modification by themself. Something like internal tranny work isn't something you just *try* or read an article on the 'net for a How-To.

Idon't even like touching the insides on a transmission. I dropped my tranny and had Josh from Topspeed put my ATS in, because I know that he's had about 30 or 40 tranny rebuilds under his belt.

I'm not doubting your ability at all, Ed. So don't take this as a flame. I just think that some things should be left to professionals.

Good luck either way, man.

I don't really give a damn, if I have to learn the hard way then at least I learned. The only way to discover/improve your abilities is with experience, and well **** I need some. So I figure what the hell, and hey I've got that much more now, it's already worth it, and I haven't even got to drive it yet. The worst part of it all is being so damn anxious to get it back on the road, it's been all winter and withdrawl has not subsided!

Now anyone got some tech help?

Hell yea, that is what I was planing on doing. It would have taken me twice as long though if the we-todd-did crew did not come over and help. Beer and Burgers bring the best kind of labor

As for your tranny, I don't quite know. Mine right now has issues getting into 2nd and 4th due to something being loose in the tranny. We are having another we-todd-did-racing tranny rebuild next weekend

You need to put the axles back in an fill with fluid. Then you can roll the car around in 4th and get everything lubed an happy. Check to be sure your clutch is bled too. My tranny was very tight after the FD and KAAZ was installed and I was crappying myself that the guy had screwed up building it because I could not get 1-2! One drive around the block it was all happy again. Of course the other possibility is that you screwed something up and it's bindind. Best of luck.

Hmmm.. if the trans case went back together, then all the rods should be in their proper place, the only problem could be in the shift gate... We spent some time on that part just figuring out how it worked and making sure it would, but the big thing is to get some fluid into it and turn it over... you can try "tapping" the case around the shifter rod to vibrate the gate mechanism, might jar it loose... Right now it may be not lining up right and it's trying to shift two forks at once

**** yea, that's the chit I like to hear!

Well then I think I will try that, "once she's good and lubed it'll slide rite in." Hopefully.
