It sounds like you are looking at a JDM D15B carb motor. These are common replacements for OEM 1.5 liter non-VTEC motors. As for adding a VTEC head, you can if this is indeed the motor. Take a look at the back of the head on the passenger side. If you see a blockoff plate where a cam-driven mechanical fuel pump would go, then you have a D15B carb motor. This motor is a 16 valve motor, and can accommoate a VTEC head.

D15B2...PGMFI (Top/ back of the engine has a round intake manifold that has PGMFI on the top, right?)
Yep...D15B2. Same as my 88' DX. You CAN mini-me it, but you'll need to convert to MPFI and possibly ODB1 depending on which head you want to use.

I would venture to say he doesn't know...that being said, the '88-91 CRX HX and DX both came with D15B's. The Si was the only one with a D16A6 (in the US, that is).
Unless someone replaced the engine with a VTEC D15 before he got it, it's probably a D15B2

They don't sell them with the carbs at the importers. When you get one, you just swap on your stock EFI. But you can tell it was a carb motor because it should have a block-off plate on the back of the head by the distributer for a mechanical fuel pump.
