Default whats wrong with this tranny? pics!

ok, so i bought this car off a buddy. its a 96 civic with an h22. just after he finished his swap he hit a rock and cracked the bell housing on the tranny. from what ive heard he replaced it with an f22 bellhousing but with all the same guts and housing from the original h22 setup. but ever since he put it back together shifting felt pretty goofy and tight so i've pulled the tranny to figure out whats up. i think the shifting weird problem was from the bearing under the mainshaft not being seated all the way. thats fixed, but ive also noticed the gears in the stacks don't line up! (see pictures below). so is this something to do with the bellhousing? is it something normal? is it something else? ive rebuilt the stacks multiple times following the honda prelude factory manual. i can pretty much guarantee everything is there... i can't figure it out, maybe someone here knows?

any help would be much appreciated!

i just finished reassembling my transmission earlier today with the help of my teacher (he knows his ****)...and my tranny looks EXACTLY like yours...i just went out and stared at it for a while and sure enough, that last gear is at least an 1/8th of an inch below its drive gear.......hope that makes you feel better

Looks ok to me, especially if you assembled it according to the helm. There should be a spring washer on the mainshaft next to the bell housing (clutch side). Replacing part or all of the housing could change the bearing preload on the diff, so a different shim might be needed there. Do the shift forks move smoothly in the housing? Are they bent at all? Do the shift cables in the car move smoothly? You should put a quaife in there while you have it apart. Good luck.

did he replace the clutch (bellhousing) housing part of the case or just the part that covers the shafts, the main case??

the shafts look fine, as long as the offset gears dont hit each other it will be fine....though riding the edge like that could be slightly noisy....

The teeth on those gears already look like they've worn the area where they might meet each other if you look closely, or is that the way they are?

weenie - that does make me feel a lot better. i was starting to go crazy with this thing.

flyrod - yeah theres a spring washer and another washer under the mainshaft which lines up with what's in the honda factory manual. yeah i was thinking of throwing in an obx knockoff but i just want to get it running right before i start dumping money in to it . from what i remember the car seemed to move through the gears fine just felt too tight when it was running. i have a feeling this was all just from that bearing not being properly seated.

mgags7 - he replaced the bellhousing but the main case is still the h22 unit from what i understand. main problem with this information is that he did this almost 4 years ago so he doesnt remember what he did anymore. (the cars been sitting since then).

94vtecmn - the edges on the teeth look like they were machined like that. all the gears are the same and thats also the way they look in the manual.

im wondering if the countershaft kinda "floats" when the transmission is installed and on the engine. nothing directly attaches to it so its possible. the countershaft could also be riding up against the bearing on the top bearing when its running... ?

You have a helm manual right? There is a snap ring that holds the countershaft in place. Also, that misalignment you noted gets a little better when the spring washer on the mainshaft is compressed.
