Default Tuning Honda Civic (97-98 model)

Ok,

first of all, i don't know too much about cars. I know how to drive em, i know how to put fuel in it, how to step on the brake. I also do know how to change an air filter and some little stuff ... So don't shoot me when i ask something stupid ...

I know where to begin to tune a car. An air filter, exhaust and chip ...
But i want to go further. I don't know the difference between a turbo and a supercharger for example.

Where should i go ? I don't know all the differences between engines (Those B thingies) but i want something fast. Can anyone give me some advice on turbos, cold air intakes, hondata, ... whatever, just some info on how to tune a civic, and performances i can expect. My interest is not top speed, but rather accelerations ...

Thx

David

Well you have come to the right place.
http://www.howstuffworks.com is great for learning the basics of the turbo and superchargers. (super is driven by the crank shaft and the turbo is driven by the exhaust).

B series are DOHC (dual over head cam) engines while the D series is SOHC (single).

Torque is what you want for acceleration! The larger the engine the more torque.
Stop wasting money on your current engine and save for a B series swap.

IF you truly want torque then the B20 is the best route to go (B = DOHC and 20 = 2.0 liter engine)

The B20 comes out of the CRV's.
There is also the B18C5 = Integra Type R engine
B18C1 = Integra GSR engine (18 = 1.8 L)
B18B = Integra LS/RS/GS
B16A2 = 99-00 Civic SI engine (16 = 1.6L) See a pattern yet!?!

The B20 and B18B do not have VTEC.

VTEC = An aggressive cam lobe that is used once the Engine reaches higher RPM's, increases power.

actually if u don't wanna go the swap route get a supercharger that will give u a pretty good increase in torque and will give it alot more grunt when u take off. it all depends on what u want to do if u wanna drag race or take turns (auto-x or road race) or just have a quick street car, this will help determine what kinda setup u want.

Wow, that howitworks site rocks, thx for that link.

Well the purpose is drag racing. So a supercharger system. Which ones are recommended ? So i should use a B20 engine then i guess ? What about head and cams ? Changing cilinders ? Air filter and intake ? Pistons ??

O boy, i learned some new 'fashion' words thx to howitworks ...
Ha now you've got me interested ...

If you are drag racing, forget a supercharger and get a turbo. Much more potential there.

Reliability ? Euuh lets say i'd like to drive some time with it yeah, not that it breaks down or blows up after 2000 miles.

I am just trying to assemble a fast accelerating car (topspeed not so important) without using nos ...

Budget????
Low = Swap B20
Mid = Swap B20 + B16 head
High = Swap B20 + B16 head + forged goodies.

Stay here and learn for a Month before you get yourself into trouble.

B16 is the DOHC 1.6L
The head is the same head they use on the Type R only the Type R has been ported a little.

Is this car for street as well or is it drag only?

What state are you in, do you care about smog?

EDIT: Head is the upper part of the engine block that contains the valves and cams.

The B20 isn't VTEC. The B16 is......there fore you can have a VTEC B20.
http://www.crvtec.com

Street use as well huh? I would in all honesty. Purchase a B18C1 (Teg GS-R) and build it up.
Forged pistons 9.5:1 Compression Ratio
Forged Rods
Forged Crank shaft
Balanced and blueprinted
Aluminum Flywheel
6 puck Clutch (my guess I haven't researched clutchs but there have been many topics on them)
Quaife LSD (limited slip differental)
Driveshaft.com stage II drive shafts.
Have Port flow do head work. http://www.portflow.com including stainless steel valves, bronze valve guides, titanium valve spring retainers and valve springs.
Adjustable cam gears.
Port and polish the Intake Manifold
Type R trottle body
Injectors
Fuel Pressure regulator
255lph fuel pump

And use the rest on a turbo kit.
